Over the years our orphans taught her that the Keepers could be trusted, and today she moves freely between the wild and our Ithumba Unit, even taking our ex-orphans under her wing. All elephants celebrate a new baby with great fanfare, but our ex-orphans take it to the next level. Perhaps it is because they didn’t grow up in the wild, witnessing births within their natal herd. It has become a time-honoured tradition for ex-orphans to return ‘home’ to our stockades within days or even hours of giving birth, bursting with pride and eager to show off their new addition to the people who raised them. But, when an ex-orphan brings their new calf home, do they let our Keepers near? Some do, the choice is always theirs. Emily was the first of our Nursery-reared orphans to return with a wild-born calf, and she was confident enough to share her baby with the Keepers who had raised her. The most trusting examples are the ex-orphans who've returned to give birth at the Stockades - a miracle we've seen unfold twice. Emily is one of them. Melia is the other:

Eight months after she left with a wild boyfriend, Twiggy came back to say hello. She made straight for the stables, where she stooped her head to each of her former Keepers in turn. Then she was down at the mud bath with the orphaned elephants and loitering in the gardens with the smaller orphans, as though the past eight months spent roaming the wild had never happened. Ex-orphan Yatta has delivered a baby girl! After giving birth over the weekend, the proud mum made a detour to our Ithumba stockades — choosing to share her new calf with the people who raised her. We named her daughter Yara, which means ‘small butterfly’ in Arabic. We rescued Yatta — who lost her own mother to poachers — in 1999. Today would have been the 91st birthday of our founder, the late, great Dame Daphne Sheldrick. Although no longer with us, her legacy lives on through the orphan elephants in our care and those reintegrated back into the wild. Before Daphne, no one had successfully raised an orphaned infant African elephant. Through trial and error, successes and heartache, she developed the milk formula and husbandry needed to see these babies through infancy — laying the foundations that have seen more than 300 orphan elephants given a second chance. This evening, we joined Head Keeper Edwin as our Nursery herd came home for a warm bottle of milk and a cosy place to bed down. A ritual that’s taken place for decades — begun by Dame Daphne, and continued in her memory. — Meet the orphans in Nairobi and support them through an adoption for yourself, or a gift for someone special:

She and her mother Kalama — an orphan we rescued, raised, and rewilded — show up at the stockades most mornings, so they can share sunrise (and lucerne for mum) with their human-elephant family. Proud as punch, the first-time mum — an ex-orphan who we rescued 15 years ago — brought her son to the Ithumba stockades, so he could meet her extended elephant-Keeper family. Mwana isn't a baby anymore. She has tusks now. She turned three in March, and the Keepers have started preparing for the next milestone: her mother, Murera is expecting her second calf, due later this year, making Mwana a big sister. She's already had plenty of practice under her belt, helping to take care of the other wild-born babies in the herd who have come after her. When they first turned up, she was a bit put out that she wasn’t the baby anymore. Now, though, she’s a doting sisterly figure to them. Mwana is one of 92 calves born to orphaned elephants we've rescued, raised and returned to the wild. Meet some of the others:

We could not believe our eyes when we saw Alia in the middle of the mud bath last month. She arrived at the Nursery in October 2025, withdrawn and slow to approach the herd. She watched the others from the edges – feeding, putting weight back on, working out who was who. Mud baths happened around her, not with her. And then, the Keepers found her trunk-deep in one, alongside Mzinga, Muridjo and Olomunyak, getting comprehensively coated. A step in the right direction, wouldn't you agree?

Wamata used to be the spoilt baby. Now she is blossoming into a caring responsible girl. For months, she was the youngest in our Nairobi Nursery herd – the one the older girls fussed over. Then Kipekee and Daba arrived, smaller and newer, and her role shifted. She has grown into it beautifully, although she still makes sure she is the centre of attention somehow. Case in point: she has worked out if she lies on her side, the younger orphans will clamber on her belly and even her face. Perhaps she'll be a mini-matriach like Kerrio in the making? Omo, a lot is happening o. Lady share a shocking experience she had with a lësbǐan who pressured her. At first she didn’t want to pay attention to the babe because she had a boyfriend until one day when she went out and the girl asked her to come over as høøk up then she requested for 1million and the girl sent it to her immediately then she had a rethink about her choice. She started giving her attention and getting gifts from her then started having a strange feelings until one day she caught her with another person that led to a disagreement…. I’m speechless 🤷😬

Newborn elephants can stand within 20 minutes of birth — they need to, in order to keep up with their herd which will regularly be on the move. Ex-orphan Kalama's brand new baby girl Kapuki had no issues finding her feet when she entered the world on 1st July, but the sloped surface outside our Ithumba Stockades clearly presented an amusing challenge for her yesterday! Kalama stays focused on her food - she's feeding for two after all - knowing her little girl will figure it out, and if she doesn't, there are plenty of willing nannies on hand. Kapuki is the 77th calf born to an orphan we have rescued, raised, and rewilded, and now we are welcoming grand-calves too. Elephant families here today because of a life saved many years ago.
