A 40-year-old patent has finally been brought to life. That's the Y-zipper. A 3D-printed three-sided fastener that transitions any object from flexible to rigid and back again. The robotics application is the one that caught my attention. A quadruped robot that adjusts its leg stiffness depending on terrain, switching between rigid and flexible in real time without additional motors or complex mechanical systems. A robot snake for the rescue! 🛟 Mechanum wheels, reconfigurable shape, camera set. These robots were developed by researchers at The University of Manchester. This machine is called MIRRAX-150, and it performs inspections as well as explorations. To map 3D point clouds, this machine uses low-cost components, 3D printing, and LiDAR technology. 🧭 Soon, this robot will be deployed on the Sellafield nuclear power station. It can print parts for its own tools, pick them up, clean them, and put them together, all by itself. Think of it like a robot that can 3D print a spatula, assemble it, and then use it to flip pancakes. 🥞 Instead of just printing objects, the Functgraph can actually perform physical tasks, like folding laundry or slicing vegetables, by using printed and assembled tools. It’s a step toward the idea of a robot that can download "apps" as physical skills, much like your phone downloads software! 👀

Getting it done in 74 seconds required pushing every variable to its limit. Pulley and belt systems optimized for minimal slop, machine rigidity improvements to eliminate flex under high acceleration, input shaping to cancel out resonance frequencies that cause ringing artifacts at high speeds. A 3D scanner to analyze print quality objectively. Frequency analysis to identify and cancel specific resonance modes in the frame and motion system. Printing metal made easy! 🖊️ Most metal 3D printing today relies on heat. Lasers or electron beams melt metal powder or wire, fuse it, and let it solidify again. That works, but it’s inefficient: a lot of energy is lost before it ever reaches the material, and even more is wasted as heat dissipates into the surroundings. This work explores a very different idea. Instead of melting metal, it uses high-frequency, low-amplitude mechanical vibrations to temporarily lower a metal’s yield stress and enhance atomic diffusion. Under these conditions, metal can be shaped and joined without full melting. By combining shaping and joining at the same time, the researchers introduce a new additive manufacturing process called Resonance-Assisted Deposition (RAD). Because it avoids melt–solidification, RAD is far more energy-efficient and enables things that are difficult or impossible with conventional methods. Pretty cool method! The robot is used to inspect the walls of ships. 🚢 The Magnet Crawler introduced by the University of Bremen is a lightweight and compact climbing robot for magnetic surfaces. The robot has two magnetic wheels driven by geared motors and an elastic tail to improve stability. In the front part of the robot, there is a miniature wireless camera. The robot is remotely teleoperated & the video signal from the camera is displayed to the operator on a portable screen. Let's wait and perhaps the robot will become more autonomous over time.
