I’ve watched this 6 times and I still can’t figure out how the pieces of wood get smaller and larger.

Just a good lesson on not judging a book by its cover. There is always complexity to everything.

This can’t be it because the signs are in the wrong language, but in DC there’s a museum of illusions I went to last year that has most of these exact exhibits. Pretty fun. I recommend it.
