One of my favorite films. Steve Martin reflects on his time with John Candy, and the cut footage from the train station scene in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. The entire ending scene was cut short and changed to what we see now —which Martin couldn't understand why, as Candy wasn't acting, nothing which could come from a script, but being himself.

And up to December 1991, it was American policy to try to preserve Soviet Union. So it's really striking that all that's solid really can melt into air. The things that seem like absolute bedrocks, or even axioms of political thought, can cease to exist. Breakup of Soviet Union also means that 1990s in Russia happened faster there than here. Time goes faster there than in US. That means that things that are going to happen in US start to happen faster there, such as political postmodernism or return of a certain kind of fascism or oligarchy. So the end of Soviet Union shows that things can come to an end, but it also shows some of the possibilities of 21st-century politics which we then wade into ourselves later on.
