A Turkish Navy warship arrived in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, on Saturday and docked at the Port of Mogadishu. The vessel, TCG Göksu (F-497), is a Gabya-class frigate that has previously operated off the Somali coast as part of Turkey’s naval mission in the region. The warship has been involved in providing security and escort for Turkish vessels conducting maritime energy exploration activities off Somalia, including the Oruç Reis seismic research vessel. Maritime police from Puntland boarded the vessel and recorded purported video clips of the military vehicles. A security source says there are discussions about possibly towing the vessel to a port along the coastline. The source said they believe the ship’s destination was Mogadishu where Turkey runs a military training facility. Turkey also recently increased its military presence in Somalia. It’s unclear if the APCs are for the Turkish forces or Turkish-trained Somali soldiers. (The unverified clip was shared by a local source)
