A space elevator is a proposed transport system with a cable from Earth's surface to beyond geostationary orbit, kept taut by Earth's rotation, allowing electric climbers to shuttle cargo and people into space cheaply and safely, bypassing rockets. The main challenge is creating an incredibly strong, lightweight tether (like...

Sounds great, until the next hurricane.

I was surprised to learn that the energy to send something in orbit is far less the "elevation" of the satellite in altitude, than the speed it need to have, around the earth. Therefore an "elevator" having any interest should look like that, attached at 2 sides on earth 😇

Somebody chops it off at the bottom and it just flings out in the space 😃

So it’s going to be over 22 thousand miles long? And somehow gravity won’t be pulling it down? Never going to happen.

Then one Indian semi truck driver hits an illegal U-turn and you got a gravitational carbon whip.

Geostationary orbit is very far from the earth’s surface, so this doesn’t sound very feasible… 🤔 But space elevators are great things for science fiction stories!

I feel like when you reach the top you would be thrown out into space like a sling shot from the eccentrical force

This is the elevator to the Space Restaurant in Epcot at Disney World Orlando. It was cool but the physics of it didn’t seem plausible to me.

I am far from an expert but have thought about this before. I came to the conclusion that a fixed elevator would not be posible but if there was a winch in space then we could pull people into space. Same problem arises with the cable strength/length 🤔
