🚨🇺🇸 NASA astronaut Jessica Meir shared stunning footage from aboard SpaceX Crew Dragon showing a rare southern aurora shimmering across Earth's atmosphere after a recent solar event. Auroras occur when charged particles from the Sun slam into Earth's magnetic field, releasing energy that can illuminate entire regions of the planet with waves of color. Writers: Mhedi / Samuel

What looked like a falling star or a meteor streaking through the San Francisco night sky was actually a SpaceX capsule carrying astronauts, heading to a middle-of-the-night splashdown in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego. An ailing astronaut returned to Earth with three others on Thursday, ending their space station mission more than a month early in NASA's first medical evacuation. At 12:41 a.m. the Dragon capsule with four astronauts landed in mild seas off San Diego. The reentry came over Santa Barbara a few minutes earlier and was followed by a moderate sonic boom. It capped a 10 hour descent from the International Space Station.

SpaceX has developed one of the safest, most reliable parachute systems for human spaceflight Before trusting Dragon’s parachutes with astronauts, SpaceX put the system through nearly 100 tests and flights The upgraded Mark 3 parachutes were built for one of the most critical moments of human spaceflight... bringing astronauts safely back home to Earth And this became part of something much bigger SpaceX restored America’s ability to launch astronauts to orbit from American soil and bring them safely back home aboard an American spacecraft For nearly a decade, America had lost that capability SpaceX brought it back 🇺🇸 SpaceX treats astronaut safety as the highest priority, testing critical systems again and again before ever trusting them with human lives
