A unique design from University of Virginia. The variety of designs makes this competition valuable for NASA. We take data on the robots and learn how to improve lunar mining every year. So far we have evaluated over 500 lunar mining prototypes. You can see this robot is rigid-body (no suspension) but watch when a wheel lifts off the ground: it doesn’t spin out of control, which would shear the soil, dilating it and making it lose shear strength, making the driving more difficult. I am impressed by their wheel control. It is harder to drive in lunar regolith than most people would guess due to the high dilatancy from lunar soil’s extremely broad particle size distribution.

Wow. China just completed a tethered takeoff and landing test of their crewed Lanyue lunar lander prototype. The country is pushing to land astronauts on the Moon’s surface before 2030, and this successful test was a huge step forward. The completion of this landing and ascent verification test validated the overall design, engine shutdown procedures, and the integration of the GNC and propulsion subsystems.

Endurance, our MK1 lunar lander, has entered Chamber A for approximately 11 days of TVAC testing to simulate the extreme thermal and vacuum conditions it will experience in space and on the lunar surface. LPV will deploy to the Moon’s surface and demonstrate pneumatic sample collection of lunar regolith by collecting and sorting regolith within its sample collection chamber.

The moon's mass and assumed density suggest it should have settled into spherical form... with a single center of mass. Free to rotate on any axis. But the moon's rotation is completely and precisely locked to its orbital period around Earth. This implies mass is not distributed radially symmetrical. A huge anomaly. Something within the lunar crust is extremely rigid.
