Kumki elephants deployed to tackle human-elephant conflict To mitigate frequent human-elephant conflicts in Chittoor and Manyam Parvathipuram districts and to protect both human lives and farmers’ crops, the Government of Andhra Pradesh, with the support of the Government of Karnataka, brought trained Kumki elephants to the state in May. After completing Andhra Pradesh mahouts at the camp set up near Palamaneru, these Kumki elephants have now been successfully deployed to drive away wild elephants entering the Palamaneru forest division. This marks the beginning of a crucial operation aimed at safeguarding nearby villages and agricultural lands. I am immensely grateful for the gracious gesture of Karnataka Government, in handing over the Kumki elephants to Andhra Pradesh at the prestigious Vidhana Soudha. This is not just an administrative formality, but a testament of cooperative federalism. These trained Kumki elephants play a crucial role in mitigating the loss of human lives and crop damage caused by wild elephant attacks resulting from human-wildlife conflict in Andhra Pradesh. What makes this even more special is the spirit in which it was done. The moment our state raised the proposal, the response from the Karnataka Government was swift, respectful, and above politics. Yesterday, I have visited the Kumki Elephant Training Camp at Musalamadugu, Palamaneru and was delighted to see the excellent care and training being given to the elephants. With the help of these Kumkis, we have successfully carried out two operations, bringing great relief and happiness to the local communities. We are taking special care of the Kumkis — just as they were lovingly cared for in Karnataka. Our forest teams are continuously monitoring their health, conducting regular check-ups, and providing every necessary care and comfort. This collaboration between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka reflects our shared commitment to wildlife protection and compassionate coexistence. We are deeply thankful to the Government and people of Karnataka for their invaluable support in providing these Kumki elephants to Andhra Pradesh. Our special thanks to Ms. Meenakshi Negi, IFS, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & HoFF, and Sri Subhash Malkhede, Chief Wildlife Warden, Karnataka, for their guidance and cooperation in this effort. Earlier, with the support of the Karnataka Government, 4 Kumki elephants were brought to Andhra Pradesh and successfully assisted in multiple operations to safely guide wild elephants back to their forest habitats. An exclusive aerial survey has exposed 76.74 acres of illegal encroachment inside the protected Mangalam Peta forest lands in the eastern ghats, linked to former Forest Minister and senior leader Sri Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy (Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy) garu. Hon’ble Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan visited the site, reviewed the violations, briefed Hon’ble CM Sri N Chandrababu Naidu garu, and Cabinet Ministers, and immediately ordered a comprehensive probe. Pawan Kalyan directed officials to: 🔸Publish the names of all forest land encroachers on the department website. 🔸Reveal the extent of encroachment and the status of cases on each individual. 🔸Take strict legal action against anyone who grabbed forest land, without exceptions. 🔸Investigate discrepancies in land records, including inflated Webland entries and false claims of “ancestral land” inside protected forest areas. 🔸Act based on vigilance reports and legal expert guidance. 🔸Digitize all land records to prevent manipulation and ensure transparency. Pawan Kalyan directed officials to: 🔸Publish the names of all forest land encroachers on the department website. 🔸Reveal the extent of encroachment and the status of cases on each individual. 🔸Take strict legal action against anyone who grabbed forest land, without exceptions. 🔸Investigate discrepancies in land records, including inflated Webland entries and false claims of “ancestral land” inside protected forest areas. 🔸Act based on vigilance reports and legal expert guidance. 🔸Digitize all land records to prevent manipulation and ensure transparency. Forest lands are national assets. Those who encroach upon them, misuse them, or violate forest laws, no matter who they are, will be held accountable. The government will not tolerate the grab of protected forest areas or wildlife zones.
