Video recorded near Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, southern Iran, shows a U.S. Army AH-64E Guardian attack helicopter patrolling over the Strait and flying near Iranian fishing boats to identify the individuals aboard them and ensure that they are not members of the IRGC Navy. Because of the presence of these helicopters, as well as armed drones, fighter jets, and many other U.S. military assets over the Strait of Hormuz, IRGC Navy personnel can no longer freely operate vessels or boats in the waters off southern Iran. Only local fishermen and civilians are allowed by the U.S. military to sail in the waters south of Iran.

The drone in question is widely believed to be a Shahed-136. Although relatively large, the Shahed-136 has a small radar cross-section, making it difficult to detect. It likely approached at high speed and very low altitude, catching the helicopter crew by surprise.
