A visual representation of the arm “swing/path/action” for your viewing pleasure. PSA: The “shape” of the arm action doesn’t exist in isolation.

Keep in mind that the shape of the arm swing is inherently a byproduct of: Each and every point of the kinematic sequence (a complicated way to describe the pitching delivery) before the initiation of the arm “swing” How structures closer to the body's midline organize themselves to generate force and shape movement It’s important to understand how the body’s midline (proximal structures) and extremities (distal structures) work together. This connection creates a chain reaction, where movement or force in one area directly affects the others. *In case you were wondering, NO, I do not own the rights to this video; this is for educational purposes ONLY*

Think your arm slot is just about being “over the top” or “sidearm”? It’s not that simple. Pitch profiles and arm slots are mostly byproducts of your physical capacity and overall movement strategy—not just where you try to throw from. Not sure if I can source the exact quote here by John DeRouin ~’The shapes creates the shapes’ How does someone like Chase Burns lift carry the ball @ 18”+ in the big leagues at 98 (Yes, this is much different than throwing 18” on your local trackman indoors) ? In my opinion, if you’ve got more available room and control of the sagittal plane: more capacity to get the pelvis under, flex the spine, and control the ribcage— you’re delaying delay global extension of the thorax and lumbar spine. Which means you hit terminal extension and the coupled side bend later in the sequence. Conversely, if you run out of sagittal plane space early—whether from poor capacity or a naturally wider structure—you extend earlier, needing to rely on better frontal plane mechanics for velocity. And if you can’t sideband well, you’ll rotate early, the arm unwinds around, not over, and you’ll end up with more east-west shapes. But that pitch shape isn’t magic—it’s a byproduct of how the arm unwinds through release. And how the arm unwinds is driven by unique factors for each athlete. Looking under the hood matters. The shape of the pitch starts long before the arm ever comes through. (And this isn’t even acknowledging and understanding the structural limitations of the shoulder + elbow + hand which is MASSIVE)

Should every pitcher grip a 2-seam changeup? 🧐 Performance Specialist @T_Zombro24 makes his case for why every pitcher should at least try to throw a changeup with a 2-seam orientation.
