Giving a name is not a uniquely human trait!❤️ Research suggests that other social species also give names to each other and respond to their names. For example there are species of parrot parents that give their chicks a ‘signature call’ or ‘name’, which is learned in the nest. Dolphins learn their own, idiosyncratic ‘signature whistle’ from their mother. They recognise and remember the ‘names’ of other dolphins too. A study found that male dolphins respond more strongly to the whistles of consistently helpful allies than to those of more erratic aides. It is thought elephants have their own names, but as they communicate largely infrasonoric we can't discern the names they use. There is so much we don't know yet...
