So called empty space isn't empty at all. It's full of energy, and that energy is electromagnetic in nature. When they calculated the amount of energy, they found it to be infinite, so they renormalized it. We don't feel this energy because we're in an equilibrium with it, but if conditioned correctly it can be harnessed. Atoms are sitting in a sea of energy.
