Measures in the Crime and Policing Bill would make it easier for the police to ban or restrict protests in the “vicinity” of places of worship. The government has made it clear that its main target is the marches in support of Palestinian rights.

Arguments in favour of these measure rely on a false representation of the Palestine marches as a threat to Jewish people and synagogues despite the participation of thousands of Jewish individuals and a bloc of Jewish groups in every single march.

These measures could allow members of religious congregations to veto protests for causes they politically oppose. Socially conservative religious groups might use the law to block a Pride parade on the grounds that encountering it on route to church would make them uncomfortable.

The right to protest – including in solidarity with the Palestinian people or in opposition to the policies and actions of the British government – is a precious democratic principle and should be defended. Read PSC’s full briefing here:
