Activists are once again treating sacred fire as a shield, asserting that it transforms public protest into private sanctuary, off-limits to cameras. It’s fair to respectfully ask not to be filmed. But there is no legal, and arguably no moral, obligation to comply. Some of the activists at the... #KillBill5 encampment have documented histories of fomenting chaos. Their presence all but guarantees this protest at Queen’s Park will continue to be documented. If privacy is the goal, the group should relocate to private property, obtain permits for a sacred fire on public land (which still doesn’t override others’ civil liberties, though the city recommends not filming sacred fires), or position the fire out of public view. We were accused of agitating simply for standing 30 feet away. Activists approached us to initiate the confrontation. Good for you for standing your ground. I 100% agree with everything you’ve said and I genuinely believe the mass majority of society are extremely uneducated in terms of the rights of not only themselves but of others. At this point - I gotta imagine it almost feels personal and has lit some sort of fire under your ass given the way you (and other independent journalists) have been treated for essentially doing nothing wrong and/or illegal. I also encourage your camera man (respectfully encourage) to start standing his ground and to stop being bullied/pushed back from his space - if in need of more camera men feel free To shoot me a DM. I respect what you do.

He’s filming everyone at the market, but the police say there’s nothing they can do. Whose side are you on? A male videographer (the "auditor"), who is wearing a disguise for anonymity, is filming at an outdoor market. He is confronted by a market organizer (Kaylee Dolan) regarding his filming of vendors and attendees. A law enforcement officer arrives to mediate the dispute. The organizer expresses concern that the videographer is making vendors and patrons uncomfortable and asks him to stop or leave. The videographer asserts his right to film in a public area, refusing to comply with her request. The responding officer confirms that the videographer is in a public space where he has a legal right to record. The officer acknowledges the organizer's frustration but explains that, as no crime is being committed, he cannot compel the man to stop filming or force him to leave. The tension arises from the intersection of constitutional rights and personal expectations of privacy. Police understandably want to keep the peace with minimal friction or risk of escalation. Unfortunately, that can sometimes come at the expense of protecting other citizens’ rights. It is not appropriate to acquiesce to activists’ demands to exclude journalists from documenting a publicly advertised event held in a public park— here, an anti-Canada rally on Canada Day. This is not only hypocritical, given these activists’ own track record of disrupting public order through protests and counterprotests, but it also rewards intimidation and violence. Friends, the title of my ministry, Word on Fire, came from our Gospel for today. Jesus says to his disciples, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing!” This is not the lighting of a cozy campfire. This is closer to, if you want, Sodom and Gomorrah—to fire and brimstone. It is a dangerous and divisive fire. Christ is the light of the world, the divine luminosity—but to the degree that we are still in darkness, we will experience that light as something difficult, off-putting, even torturous.

If you guessed that Toronto Police cautioned my videographer for breach of the peace, you’d be correct— not correct at law or in principle, of course, but correct in your estimation of police. My videographer has a documented track record of capturing significant protest moments on video, including eight arrests from the same Antifa network at the last major counterprotest. Yet he was continually chased and harassed at Nathan Phillips Square, with zero police intervention. Gisela McKay seems busy in 2025. So far she has participated in and/or organized the: ✅ disruption at Chrystia Freeland’s leadership campaign launch; ✅ demonstration outside MP Bill Blair’s (maybe) home; ✅ protest at Boiler Room rave; ✅ sit-in at the Globe and Mail; ✅ distribution of hot food with no hand-washing station at City Hall; ✅ obscenity-laden concert within earshot of public skating rink; and ✅ disruption at municipal budget meeting. This list is not exhaustive, and it is only the end of February. It is reasonable to question whether this sacred fire outside the courthouse is, in fact, a pretence to provoke confrontation with local authorities. Last year, Gisela organized a dance party outside Toronto Police Headquarters that resulted in two arrests, including an Indigenous woman hyped up to the point of allegedly assaulting police (and sustaining injuries herself, including to her eyes). Apparent courthouse fire keeper Jordn Scum is involved in the same protest scene, sometimes to his own material detriment. Anyone associated with Gisela opens themselves up to scrutiny based on her track record of exploiting public resources while simultaneously disrupting public order. Law enforcement seems to be taking a laissez faire approach, allowing people to use protest and culture as smokescreens for chaos— even if a permit was obtained (not yet confirmed), disputes cannot be resolved with vigilante violence. The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Arch, a Civil War monument honoring those who fought in a war waged for a new birth of freedom and the expansion of democracy itself. 🚨An Anti-ICE Gestapo conspired to impede our right to move freely on public property at an ICE Out protest in Philadelphia. When we arrived at the protest happening at City Hall, two men wearing armbands approached us. One claimed to have “security clearances” to keep me from entering the protest, which was being held on public property. We asked if the police department gave him permission to do this, and he confirmed that he did not have clearance from the Philadelphia Police Department to stop me from entering. We then asked for his name and what organization he was acting on behalf of, but he refused to answer. As we entered the protest the two men became four. After one of the men invaded our personal space, we informed all four of them that what they were doing was unconstitutional and illegal. This seemed to make them uncomfortable. Unfortunately later in the protest, our phone and microphone was stolen by an ANTIFA agitator while we covered the demonstration further. With many violations of the law being documented at these events, our question is this: Should these protests be considered unlawful gatherings?

A well-spoken concerned citizen informed the councillor that there is no reasonable expectation of privacy, or to not be recorded, at a public event hosted by a public official. Councillors should proceed with the knowledge that citizens of Toronto are the eyes and ears of this city.

The dark side of Ballinasloe Fair… On Sunday we attended the Ballinasloe Fair & were disgusted by some of the sights we witnessed. This fair is advertised as a family event where you can expect it to be fun filled, nowhere can we see any posts alluding to the safety & welfare of the animals on sale or on show at this event. Our video is just some of the footage we got throughout the day & we are calling on the authorities & the fair sponsors to do better - respect the lives of the innocent animals at this fair & SHUT the pit down! Enforce better standards throughout - access to water, access to hay, limited time on the green, & enforced checking of passports & microchips. We’re calling on members of the public to write to the authorities & sponsors to express your disappointment & anger that in 2023 this type of abuse is still allowed to continue in such a public manner without challenge. At one point, our volunteer confronted the guy on the mule & was subjected to 20/30 men shouting back at her & then encouraging the abuser to continue is horrible ways. Thankfully this mule was seized by the ISPCA but not before it was let loose, hit with sticks, slapped & chased through the fair by grown men to cause disruption. Our video shows only a small piece of that event that unfolded. We wish to thank the ISPCA for the incredible job they did at the fair on Sunday in what can only be described as challenging circumstances by a minority. We reported numerous abuse cases & welfare concerns & they acted without hesitation. Our ask is that the presence be increased by all authorised officers to ensure there is nowhere to hide for these abusers to continue. We do want to acknowledge the genuine equestrian enthusiasts who attend the fair with their beautiful well cared for equines. The abuse is a minority but there is no excuse in this day & age for it to be allowed to continue. Again we need the public to come together to make change happen & that change needs to happen now. Ballinasloe is on again this weekend. The pit will be open & more animals will suffer. What are you going to do about it? The dark side of Ballinasloe Fair… On Sunday we attended the Ballinasloe Fair & were disgusted by some of the sights we witnessed. This fair is advertised as a family event where you can expect it to be fun filled, nowhere can we see any posts alluding to the safety & welfare of the animals on sale or on show at this event. Our video is just some of the footage we got throughout the day & we are calling on the authorities & the fair sponsors to do better - respect the lives of the innocent animals at this fair & SHUT the pit down! Enforce better standards throughout - access to water, access to hay, limited time on the green, & enforced checking of passports & microchips. We’re calling on members of the public to write to the authorities & sponsors to express your disappointment & anger that in 2023 this type of abuse is still allowed to continue in such a public manner without challenge. At one point, our volunteer confronted the guy on the mule & was subjected to 20/30 men shouting back at her & then encouraging the abuser to continue is horrible ways. Thankfully this mule was seized by the ISPCA but not before it was let loose, hit with sticks, slapped & chased through the fair by grown men to cause disruption. Our video shows only a small piece of that event that unfolded. Public protests are a form of free speech. We are not expected to agree with the messaging of every public protest (I often hate them). But, boil it down and we have a simple choice: 1. Let public protests take place ... and in some cases put up with some minor inconvenience. If things get unruly, well ... that's why we have a police force. 2. Use state power to say 'yes to this protest' but 'no to that protest' ... and then use state violence to physically stop all the illegal protests. This is what is known as a 'police state.' The Libertarian Party supports the adoption of a US style First Amendment in our state and federal constitutions: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO PEACEABLY TO ASSEMBLE AND TO PETITION THE GOVERNMENT FOR A REDRESS OF GRIEVANCES.' Peace officer at Queen’s Park moves my videographer away from the counter protest, acknowledging the problem lies with the crowd—not him. This may not have been intended as punishment, but it impeded our work nonetheless. Mere presence in public cannot reasonably be construed as agitation. Yet police defer to violent Antifa activists rather than protect the right of independent media to document a public demonstration where an elected official, NDP MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam, had just finished speaking. We attended Church Street to document an encampment clearing at The 519, following a public call-out from local activists for “physical support/defence” to resist it. Several familiar faces from the protest circuit were present, including individuals with a history of provoking confrontations with police to generate footage that supports their anti-establishment narratives. Gisela McKay and her comrades appeared to incite a man to physically attack my videographer. This incident resulted in the individual’s arrest.
