"I had seen 'Paris, Texas' (1984) by Wim Wenders, photographed by an Austrian cinematographer, Robbie Muller. His films were beautifully lit and composed, with long uninterrupted takes. This was the style I wanted for 'To Live and Die in L.A' (1985)" --- William Friedkin

One of the reasons William Friedkin made "To Live and Die in LA" (1985) was to surpass the car chase he filmed in "The French Connection" (1971). He wanted the chase to be the centerpiece of the movie. Robby Müller shot most of the movie, but he told Friedkin that he didn't feel confident enough shooting the chase scene. Friedkin replaced him with Robert Yeoman, one of the camera operators. Friedkin believed Yeoman was the right choice as he was "too young and inexperienced to be afraid of the challenge." Yeoman later said, "Friedkin gave me a big break and I would be forever indebted to him. Shooting the chase scene sort of prepared me for anything. I always said 'After that, anything would be easy'". P.S: Remembering the legendary American filmmaker, William Friedkin on his 90th birthday!

William Friedkin is responsible for two of the greatest car chases in film history: The French Connection & To Live and Die in L.A. This came out 40 years ago today & there still hasn’t been a car chase that I can say definitively tops this one. Friedkin inspired a generation.

Today would've been Alan Rickman's 80th birthday. Here he tells a great story on telling the DIE HARD producers he could do the 40 ft. fall himself and them being utterly panicked he could die if he landed wrong: "They were very careful to make it my very last shot on the film." Iconic.
