As requested by Alex Miller yesterday, a look at our out of possession shape in the first half. 1: (10 secs) - Wednesday in a very narrow high block in a 523 out of possession. It only looked like this when the ball is central. Nowrich rotate (change positions during play) a lot and this narrow block denies central rotation. In this clip, they have had rotation in left back position as the CM has dropped into the area and left back on the last line. 2: 20 secs - When the ball went wide or started to move wide, the full back would advance up the pitch to pressure the full back and press full back to full back, whilst the CBs would come out with the Norwich forwards coming in between the lines, as this ball transitions across the pitch you see Sargent come out and Iorfa following tight. Fusire in this clip has come out to mark full back to full back and creating a makeshift back 4. 3: 47 secs - Wednesday get back into their narrow block shape 4: 56 secs - rotation from the front line form Norwich 5: 58 seconds, Palmer comes out of the back line to pick up the rotation and prevent space between lines. As the player turns to our left, Amass starts to come out to pick up full back to full back on the other side. In summary, Wednesday played their familiar 523 blocking shape out of possession but it was much more proactive in the back 5 than we usually see it, with full backs and Cbs following rotations and stepping out of the backline to prevent space between lines. My #SundayShare is a breaking lines practice. Teams locked in zones look for opening for penetrative pass to a teammate for a point (waist high limit on passes). If intercepted, the other team tries the same. Coaching points: · Positioning: to receive both on half turn (in own area) and square to receive penetrative pass. · Scanning: where are the gaps? · Receiving: controlling with good first touch. · Movement: to receive and offset opponents. · Technique: firm push pass with follow through. · Deception: feint pass. Progressions: (1) players on two touches; (2) first time penetrative pass = 2; (3) after two passes, one opponent can enter the quarter for a 1 v 3. If they win the ball they pass back to their teammates and re-join their group. Formed first practice in whole – part - whole session with the U11 as part of Block 3 of the training syllabus. Motherwell In Possession I've been so impressed by Motherwell's performance and style this season. After watching back their 5-0 win from Saturday, I noticed a few key themes/principles of their play in possession: • Principle 1 - attackers occupy the spaces between FBs & CBs. This keeps opposition FBs pinned back and allows for moments to exploit opposition miscommunication. • Principle 2 - the "tapered box" in deep build-up: 2 CBs with wide positioning; 2 CMs with narrow positioning. Allows M'Well to comfortably progress the ball forward using diagonal & bounce passes. Attracts pressure from St Mirren, creating lots of space between defence & midfield to exploit. • Principle 3 - the use of 1-touch play to change the tempo. 1-touch passing disoriented St Mirren at times and didn't allow them to get appropriate pressure on the ball. It was also evident, especially on the left, that only 1 player needs to hold width (Longelo), Slattery was given a licence to roam inside and create overloads in the midfield, making it difficult for the St Mirren midfield. I genuinely believe if they had a proper goalscorer in the 1st part of the season M'well would have been top of the league as they have consistently been the best side.

If the opponents try to press with a -1, then the free man will try to be found. On the other hand, if they go man for man, there's the option of trying to find players between the lines (if the opposition center backs do not jump quick enough) or play direct for the wingers. I was introduced to this idea by watching De Zerbi's Brighton. Hurzeler still uses it.

FT Spurs 2 -2 Man City. What a game this was! How many thought that at HT ? We came into this game with such little hope because of our injuries, and that was realised very quickly. Talk about a game of 2 halves! Nobody can doubt the commitment in pulling it back level . Early doors, Vicario had to save well from Semenyo. Cherki started to terrorise a clearly not match-fit Dragusin, scoring the first and making Vic pull off a brilliant save. Bissouma looked like he was back on the ball with his distribution. Again, another mistake playing out from the back cost us a second. Rodri and Silva controlled the half if only our special guest Vertonghen could play for us today. Romero off at HT injury ? We changed formation to a back 4 and pushed forward. A sublime pass by Simons set up Solanke to score, but Guehi got there first. Simons looked very good in this half, demanding the ball and using it well. Palhinha was immense at the back made some fantastic interceptions to keep us in it. Solanke’s scorpion kick! Wow, what a goal seriously 🔥🔥 City started to lose their heads. Our boys believed they could win this. Great second-hand fight back. Very Proud of the players today.

Rescue # 1 they had to rescue him from the rip current 🛟 Rescue # 2 they had to rescue him from himself 🙄 Rescue # 3 when they were beleaguered by the first two rescues they put their feelings aside and did what their duty calls for them to do and they went in after the man for a third time only to be greeted with punches as law-enforcement looked on and waited.👮🏻‍♂️ People like this are not only a danger unto themselves but they are also a danger to not only there would-be rescuers but the public at large. It took lifeguards from up and down the beach to resolve this unnecessary situation undoubted until you’re leaving other sections of the beach unprotected…smdh 🙄

Celtic In Possession vs Rangers 1st Half vs 2nd Half 1st half: • CB's played long passes looking for runners in-behind. Safety 1st approach - lack of 'up-back-through' passing patterns. • "U-shaped" build-up along back 4, easy to press. • McGregor isolated - lack of additional midfield support to find the free man (usually opposite CB). • FBs & Wingers both on touchline - lack of rotation. 2nd half: • The 'Hatate' factor - added quality, gave McGregor support, asked more questions of Rangers' midfield. • FBs & Wingers stop receiving on the same line - FBs moved inside at times allowing CB to pass directly into Tounekti / Forrest. • As Rangers tired, Celtic were able to further utilise their 3v2 in midfield, causing defenders to jump out and gaps to appear.
