The development of the Anbesa Garage - Jukrose - Goro Square corridor has brought transformative changes to a once congested area. The addition of walkways, parking facilities, children’s playgrounds, shops, public plazas, public toilets, and designated taxi and bus bays has revitalized the neighborhood, making it more accessible, inclusive, and livable for all. Corridor development projects across both urban and rural settings continue to introduce dignified, equitable public spaces that uplift communities. In particular, our recent rural corridor initiatives aim to rejuvenate rural areas and improve the quality of life for their residents. I extend my sincere appreciation to the Addis Ababa City Administration and the subcities that have mobilized resources to expand the corridor initiative into the city’s peripheral areas. I encourage other subcities and cities across the country to keep prioritizing citizen-centered approaches as we reimagine and reconfigure urban life for the better.

Following the completion of the first phase of corridor development in Addis Ababa, the transformation of the Kasanchis quarter is one of eight major areas currently being revitalised. Once a neglected part of central Addis Ababa, Kasanchis is being reimagined as an inclusive and accessible public space. The redevelopment features asphalt roads, pedestrian walkways, bike lanes, children’s playgrounds, sports facilities, public plazas and green parks, public restrooms, commercial shops, and car parking facilities. For years now, we have had to deal with congestion and the indiscriminate use of Douglas Road, Owerri, despite its status as a major economic artery of the State. This unfortunate situation has created an enabling environment for the breeding of different classes of criminal elements, thereby undermining public safety, order, and the smooth flow of commercial activities. The deplorable condition of the road further contributed to these challenges, encouraging abuse and illegal movements, particularly by motorists and street traders. Our decision to embark on the reconstruction of this strategic road is in line with our Urban Renewal Project, which is aimed at salvaging the City of Owerri from the looming threat of economic stagnation and reversing the gradual decline in urban development and growth. Beyond restoring critical infrastructure, this intervention seeks to create a more organized, secure, and economically vibrant city, and during my inspection of the project site, I could literally feel the fresh air of relief breathed by residents and users of the road, expressing their appreciation for the transformative impact of our Urban Renewal Projects. The quality and pace of work observed are consistent with the expectations of the Government, and I am pleased that progress remains on track for completion within the contractual timeline. - Hope Uzodimma

This morning, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and First Lady Zinash Tayachew, together with senior government officials, reviewed the newly completed CMC–Goro–VIP Corridor—a transformative project connecting the Addis International Convention Center to the Bole Airport VIP terminal. This newly developed two-way road network integrates with the Bole Airport connection road at CMC, creating a seamless link across a key section of the city. Spanning more than 290 hectares, the corridor extends for 12.74 km and 15.27 km of dedicated bike lanes. With five modern bus and taxi terminals capable, four large parking facilities and 17 designated loading and unloading bays, the project is easing congestion and improving transport efficiency. It also features underground electric and telecom lines, stormwater drainage pipes and new streetlights, ensuring modern infrastructure throughout. The corridor is not only about roads but also about liveability. More than 130 hectares of riverside areas have been developed into vibrant green spaces, complemented by various facilities. Over 320 buildings have been renovated, helping to uplift the entire area. The results are already visible. More than 350 new commercial shops have opened, business activity has surged, traffic congestion has eased, and public transport services have improved. A capital city is one thing that either brings pride or shame to a people. This is in the heart of Harare, and it shows the economic degradation of our country. I do not know how my fellow Zimbabweans feel watching sadza being cooked in the middle of the capital city like this, at a place where real and structured economic life used to be vibrant and thriving. This is what one of the once beautiful and industrialised African capital cities has been reduced to. And this is happening barely a kilometre from the president’s office and less than 500 metres from the mayor’s office. A capital city should reflect order, productivity, and dignity. Instead, what we are witnessing is the visible collapse of urban management and the slow decay of a city that once stood as a symbol of possibility all because of failed economic policies. This should bring shame to every right thinking Zimbabwean, regardless of political persuasion. This man, and many like him, are victims of a failed system. A society that cannot create opportunities for its people pushes them into this kind of undignified survival mode. What we are witnessing in this video is not individual failure, but the real human cost of economic collapse and broken governance.
