Adversity will always test the space between teammates. Connection is easy when everyone is winning. The real test comes when frustration, pressure, and adversity show up. Great teams don’t splinter. They tighten the circle.

Self-control is easy when you’re weak. The real test is staying calm when you have the power to burn everything down.

Adversity doesn’t break teams. It reveals how they respond. Sean Miller keeps it simple when things go wrong: Own it. Fix it. Move on. First, own it. What was your responsibility? That’s the hardest part. Then, fix it. Work with your teammates and coaches to improve what’s actually in your control. Then, next opportunity — don’t carry it forward. The next game is the only thing that matters. Sounds simple. It’s not. Because the real challenge is the noise: “What if we lose again?” “What if I play bad again?” That’s where teams drift. Great teams don’t live in the past or future. They stay locked in the present. And here’s the key: This applies to wins too. Win? Move on. Lose? Move on. Resilience isn’t about avoiding adversity, it’s about having a repeatable response to it. When adversity hits, do you dwell on it or do you follow a process to move forward?

Adversity doesn’t beat teams. Bad responses do. You don’t need to play a perfect game. You need a response. Competition will expose you at some point. What separates great teams is how quickly they recover, reconnect, and keep attacking.

Everyone is looking for the next winning edge. Dan Lanning found one most coaches still treat like fluff: Connection. Watch Oregon warm up, and you’ll see it. Lanning is moving player to player. High five, fist bump, quick word, real eye contact. Nothing long. Nothing dramatic. Just small deposits over and over. That is social and emotional learning in real life. Not a worksheet. Not a buzzword. A culture where players feel seen before they are asked to give everything. Steve Nash understood this too. Researchers once studied NBA teams and found that the teams with more teammate touch, high fives, fist bumps, and huddles showed more cooperation and performed better later in the season. That stuff matters. Because football seasons are long. Pressure hits. Losing happens. Injuries happen. Adversity shows up. And when it does, talent is not the only thing holding a team together. Connection is. The best coaches do not just demand the standard. They model it.

“The size of the opportunity that you chase is directly related to the size of adversity that you will experience. If you want to pursue something of significant opportunity, what are you guaranteed to experience? Adversity. You cannot pursue and achieve something of significance going through light adversity. I tell you that because people say they want X, Y & Z, then they encounter the barriers and the adversities to getting X, Y, & Z and they resent the adversity. And they don't understand that what gave them the adversity was the choice to go after that opportunity.”

Not every day is going to be a good day. But every day has something good in it. The challenges you face will test you. Focus on the positives, learn from the adversity, and keep moving forward. That's how resilience is built.
