Rooted in the African diaspora on the island of Hispaniola, Palo is a syncretic tradition that combines dance, music, and sometimes linked to death rituals where the spirit is believed to possess a dancer. While often associated with the Dominican Republic, similar Afro-Caribbean dances, such as Palo de Mayo, exist in Nicaragua, Panama, and Honduras.
