In the last few hours the government has announced the first repatriation flight for British citizens in the Middle East, saying it will leave tonight. The Foreign Office says a flight out of Oman has been organised to help those stranded get home. It says it will prioritise the most vulnerable. Jonathan Swain reports.

Delhi - A potential major accident was averted due to the alertness of passengers on a SpiceJet flight from Delhi to Pune after the aircraft developed a technical issue.After passengers boarded the plane, the temperature inside the cabin suddenly rose. Everyone, including elderly passengers, experienced difficulty in breathing.Passenger Leshpal Javalge alleged that even after passengers faced breathing problems, the captain appeared to be in a hurry to take off.Eventually, it was confirmed that there was indeed a fault in the aircraft. Passengers were immediately deboarded, and a major mishap was avoided. In this regard, a demand has been made for the Ministry of Civil Aviation to take action against SpiceJet.

Ghanaian passengers were reportedly delayed by Qatar Airways at Kotoka International Airport for a flight to Doha scheduled to depart at 5:15 pm. Passengers did not board as scheduled but eventually boarded about two hours later. After boarding, they experienced further delays due to a tire burst. It appeared that the flight might be canceled, but no communication was provided to the passengers. After being left without information for about four hours, they disembarked from the plane and their boarding passes were collected with the promise of accommodation being arranged for them. As at midnight, they were still stranded at the airport with nowhere to rest and Qatar Airways were not being forthcoming with updates. However, after fighting them, they finally got their accommodation issues sorted out around 12:30am.

The Houston Fire Department said that at about 11:15 a.m., the plane departing from Hobby was returning due to a reported engine fire. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, including a small grass fire that ignited near the runway. The Boeing 737 was headed to Los Cabos International Airport in Mexico, according to the FAA. Airport officials said the plane was able to stop on a taxiway safely. Passengers were then evacuated through the slides on the aircraft.
