Kenya's odious debt is an illustration of cases around the world whereby consultants from multinational corporations identify developing countries with something of value, such as minerals, and persuade the authorities of these countries to secretly take on huge development loans with banks. In most cases, the money never reaches the countries. Rather, the money is transferred directly from the banks to offshore accounts of these crooks and the countries are then left with massive debts. Out of the Ksh 13T debt, only Ksh 6.9T can be traced from the treasury records. Ksh 6.1T is invisible, undocumented and untraceable. Where is that money and what was the money used for? By July 2023, taxpayers had paid Ksh 8.8T. That means Kenyans have no debts and have even paid in excess. The debt register must be opened. Public debts must be audited. WATCH: Chicago Ald. Desmon Yancy calls out current city employees owing “tens of millions of dollars” to the city in unpaid fines and fees. “To be paid by the city and ignoring your debts to the city is insane. Many of these employees are able to pay their debts to the city but don’t feel compelled to pay, and that’s not OK.” Kudos to Ald. Yancy for calling this out. Outrageous that these debts are not garnished from wages already, as working Chicagoans pay higher property taxes to make up the difference. Simple fix.
