With conditional payments, donations can become a proactive source of assistance based on verified measurable events. Let’s use drought as an example. Drought has affected more people this century than any other natural disaster. DIVA Protocol, Shamba, and fortuneconnectke are running a pilot with Mercy Corps Ventures on Polygon | POL to strengthen the resilience of those most impacted by climate change and less predictable weather patterns. The pilot provides an anticipatory cash program that will deploy funds with the use of smart contracts automatically, powered by oracles tied to remote sensing data that assess drought conditions. This eliminates potential external bias as funds are deployed based on predefined conditions triggered by data, rather than manual deployment which could experience personal bias. The initial pilot will support pastoralists in Kenya, which with the wider East Africa region has been experiencing drought conditions since 2020 — its worst drought in 40 years. THIS could be what next generation agricultural resistance looks like as conditions get tougher and we look for new tools to support those impacted disproportionately by the effects of climate change.
