A job is a bundle of tasks, so both can be true: few roles vanish overnight, but entry-level openings shrink as routine work disappears. I’d watch junior hiring alongside layoffs. If firms stop training beginners, the damage shows up before total headcount falls.

Most people are terrified AI will take their jobs because they confuse their tasks with their purpose. Jensen Huang explains it perfectly: If you watched a CEO all day, you would think their job is "typist" because they spend most of their time typing emails. If AI automates typing, the CEO doesn't lose their job. They just have more time to lead. The same applies to everyone. When AI automates the tasks, it enhances the purpose. Stop measuring your value by your to-do list. Your value is the purpose behind it.

White-collar jobs are getting hit harder by AI than blue-collar ones right now. Tasks like writing, data analysis, coding, research, and admin work are exactly what current AI excels at, unlike physical manufacturing work. One analysis puts white-collar automation potential at around 30%, compared to under 1% for blue-collar roles. Goldman Sachs says AI could automate 25% of all US work hours, with 300 million jobs globally exposed, though actual displacement over 10 years might be more like 6-7% of workers. What’s actually happening: AI was linked to about 4.5% of job losses in 2025, and in April 2026 it accounted for 26% of layoffs in one report. Entry-level white-collar roles, junior analysts, coders, paralegals, customer service, are seeing the biggest squeeze, with hiring slowing sharply in AI-exposed fields. BCG projects 50-55% of US jobs will change significantly in the next couple years, but only 10-15% get fully eliminated in the next five. A lot of roles are getting augmented, people using AI tools to work faster rather than being replaced outright. It’s still early, so the big wave of losses some CEOs are warning about hasn’t fully materialized yet. The real story so far is fewer new office jobs being created, especially at the entry level.

Job = U { Tasks, Judgment, Relationships, Context, Ownership} Few jobs are truly at risk of replacement by AI - these involve more deterministic IO (Input Output) execution e.g. data entry, QA, CS etc. Most jobs are resilient because: (1) Human principals (business owners) always seek to assign responsibility & blame to a human agent. (2) Deals get done not because of outbound spam but because of years of nurturing a relationship (showing up at conferences, events, meet-ups) (3) The physical world is messy AF. Humans read non-verbal & subtle cues which are only possible via in-person interactions. The midwits are right - AI is taking over tasks. In fact, if AI hasn’t taken over tasks for you then you’re doing something very wrong. If tasks are automated & workflows are changing, jobs won’t be lost. In fact, to manage the messy transition, humans will be more in demand than ever before. The data from Foundation Labs itself points to this (watch to the end of this rant)

Scott Wu says Karpathy's idea of jagged intelligence explains why humans and AI work best together. AI is superhuman at some tasks, shockingly weak at others. “As long as that tail exists of what humans can do, that's what we'll own.” We still decide what to build. In the end, software engineering is just telling the computer what to do.
