The Tesla Megapod trademark might be the most important filing nobody is talking about (Save this). Tesla wants to build a product that is basically a self contained AI computer in a box. You truck it somewhere, plug it into power, and it runs AI workloads. The reason this matters is that the AI industry has a problem because you can't build data centers fast enough. Getting land approved, getting power from the grid, getting zoning cleared, that process takes 3–5 years, and demand is moving much faster than that. US data center construction actually fell in 2025 for the first time in years, because developers kept hitting bureaucratic walls. Tesla's answer to that problem is simple. They already own thousands of Supercharger stations across the country and those stations already have land, power, and grid connections, all the hard stuff is done. The idea is to drop a Megapod at those sites and turn idle charging infrastructure into AI compute, almost overnight. What Jason, Chamath, and Friedberg were all circling around is that this drop a box on a concrete pad approach is already how serious companies are deploying AI compute right now. Vertiv and DUG Technology both ship GPU-packed containers that can go live in 90 days and Tesla would just be bringing that idea to a network it already owns. The opportunity is very real whether Tesla is the one to actually execute on it is still an open question.

China is eating our lunch on AI power. Period. You can dream about data centers in space and cities on Mars, and I love the vision, Elon executes, no question. But here on Earth, right now, we have a brutal reality problem. The grid is tapped out, demand for AI data centers is exploding, and we are nowhere close to keeping up. China added roughly 500 gigawatts of power last year. We added excuses. Nuclear matters, but it's 10 to 15 years away and AI does not wait. That is why my money is going into stranded natural gas, combined cycle turbines, and massive land tied directly to permits, power, fiber, water, and air rights all in one place. Whoever controls reliable, scalable power wins, and if we don't fix the grid fast, we lose.

OpenAI and Anthropic can take compute which costs them $15b a GW, and turn it into $50b+ of revenue. In order to get the credit to build their datacenters, most neoclouds have already signed long term contracts to supply compute at these $15b/GW rates. However, Meta and SpaceX, who have a GW+ of discretionary compute supported by their own balance sheet, can take advantage of this surge in compute prices and sell short-term contracts at the much higher rate that the leading labs (who are best able to monetize this compute) are willing to bid for.

Banning is the wrong move, here's the fix instead: 1) Build their own power - Data centers should fund their own electrical infrastructure. 2) Allow small modular nukes - During a blizzard or grid emergency, the data center has to switch power back to the grid to help residents. 3) Incentivize next-gen cooling - Offer state credits to companies developing advanced cooling tech to cut water use. 4) Set distance rules, not bans - Require data centers to sit a set distance from populated areas.
