"You deserve to be severely punished for the crimes against this nation," asserted a young Alberta separatist when asked about his message to Ottawa and PM Mark Carney. I asked for his personal views on the federal Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, and why he became a separatist. "Why should Alberta, home to the hardest-working people in Canada, pay for the welfare state of Canada?" he questioned. He recounted being ridiculed in class by his teacher for expressing his political views in the past. "Who’s laughing now?" he asks, after Alberta held its largest separatist protest yet at the Legislature. On the federal Conservative Party, he said he likes Pierre Poilievre but expressed distrust of the party, citing the presence of "a bunch of foreigners" in their ranks. The Bill threatens Indigenous rights, sovereignty and the very Treaties this country and the province of Alberta was founded on. Bill 54 opens the path for Alberta to separate from Canada. But Treaty chiefs say it’s not going to happen on their watch.
