Alex Hernandez (RF/1B, Georgia Tech Baseball). Yet another Yellow Jacket having a monster season. .442/.552/.652 with 7 HR. Some BP/game swings from Sat/Sun. Doesn't chase much; works middle/backside of field.

Another day, another Volpe AAA HR. His 9th since being sent down on August 7th. In 108 PAs through 24 games of AAA since then: .287/.380/.660 (1.040 OPS) 9 HRs + 6 SBs + 17 RBIs 22.2 K% - 12.0 BB% For those more advanced metrics oriented: - 15.4% Barrel (hitting the ball hard in the air) - 53.8% SwtSpt (hitting the ball in the air often) - 17.8% Chase (still maintaining a passive approach off the plate) - 23.5% Whiff (all while maintaining around average contact rates) - With a .386 xwOBA I hope Volpe becomes positionally flexible and is able to come off the bench at some point. I'd much rather his approach than Cabby ASAP. But unfortunately, Cabby provides universal positional flexibility everywhere in the field that Volpe doesn't offer.

Very excited to watch OF Carson Benge (OSU Cowboy Baseball) this spring. Enjoyed an excellent first full season in 2023, hitting .345 with 17 2B, 7 HR, 43 RBI, and more BB (42) than K (32). Hit .345 with 4 RBI in a 9-game stint on the Cape. Wiry and athletic frame at 6'1", 184-pounds. Serious violence in his swing that is geared towards doing damage and getting the ball in the air. Plenty of hand speed, does a nice job consistently generating back spin. Impressive ability driving the baseball to all fields. Sound approach, above average bat-to-ball skills. Big barrel tip, but consistently on time and gets in a good position to hit. Absolutely pulverizes heaters - .529/.691/.824 slash line against FB 91+. Good athlete with a plus arm in RF that will allow him to stick at the position. Also has some experience on the mound where he showed feel to spin and a FB up to 96. Plays the game extremely hard and at one speed. It is abundantly clear that he loves to play! Potential top-2 round selection this July.

1B Tanner Thach (UNCW Baseball) is another college bat to keep close tabs on this season. Thach was drafted by the Giants in the 18th round of the 2022 draft but decided to honor his commitment to the Seahawks. Thach made a significant impact in his first year on campus and posted a .290/.356/.544 slash line with 11 2B, 15 HR—a UNCW single-season freshman record—and 68 RBIs. He outdid himself in 2024 and hit .324/.406/.700 with 11 2B, a UNCW single-season record 27 HR and 75 RBIs in 61 games. Thach’s production didn’t end there, though, as he was named a Cape League all-star, hitting .275/.367/.493 with 6 doubles, 8 HR and 25 RBIs. Thach has a strong, physical build at 6’4” and 220-lbs. He has a crouched stance in the box with an open front side and a medium-high handset. It’s a bit of a noisy load in which he drops and drifts his hands, but Thach does possess plenty of bat speed. He has a steep, uphill swing path, and it’s a violent operation that is geared towards getting the ball up in the air and doing damage. However, it can get long at times. Thach’s carrying tool is undoubtedly his immense power. He has established a now-lengthy track record of power production with both metal and wood, and he has zero issue tapping into it on a game-to-game basis. Thach has home run power to all fields, though his highest quality of contact comes to the pull side. He gets the ball up in the air on a consistent basis, and when he catches the baseball on the sweet spot, it flies. Thach posted maximum exit velocities during the spring and summer of 113.5 mph and 103.1 mph, respectively. At the start of the summer, he would sometimes unnecessarily sell out to get to his power which caused him to top-spin line drives to the pull side, but as the season progressed he was able to break that habit. Thach has plus in-game power to all fields. The biggest key going forward for Thach is for him to continue to make enough contact to get to his power on a regular basis. His bat-to-ball skills are fringy, though he did post a 90% in-zone contact rate against all fastballs. Like a lot of hitters, the root of Thach’s contact struggles are secondary offerings. He’ll have difficulty at times picking up spin out of the hand which leads to both miss and chase. Thach will also tend to whiff and chase against heaters that are either elevated or on the outer-half of the plate. However, he does handle velocity well and last season he hit .533/.588/1.033 against all fastballs 92+. While Thach feasts on righthanded pitching, he hit just .246/.321/.551 last season against lefties. Thach’s power is tremendous, but he’ll need to add a coat or two of polish to his hit-ability as he transitions into professional baseball. First base isn’t the flashiest defensive profile, but Thach moves well around the bag and is a strong athlete at the position. He’s not afraid to range into the four-hole and he is a reassuring anchor on the right side of the infield. Thach has an advanced baseball sense, a trait that shines on a game-to-game basis. While he won’t pitch professionally, expect Thach to log some innings this spring for UNCW. His fastball tops out in the low 90s and flashes some hop in the top of the zone, but he’ll also mix in a mid-70s curveball and a low-80s changeup. The cherry on top with Thach is his makeup, both on and off the field. It’s impossible to stick a grade on it because it’s a 90 on the 20-80 scale. Would have him as a 2nd-early 3rd round type this July. (🎥: UNCW Baseball, Cotuit Kettleers)

FT Sunderland 1-0 Spurs In case of emergency break glass well it’s time to smash it. No wins in 2026 and it’s mid April. When your struggling your luck just doesn’t run your way. A completely freak own goal out of nowhere. Then to make matters worse Brobbey on a yellow card pushes Romero into our keeper injuring them both with our captain having to leave the pitch 🤦🏻‍♂️ Let’s be honest tho what was Romero doing in that 1st half he was a liability lacking any discipline he got his 9th yellow of the season some leadership this was from our so called captain. Was this performance that much different than the previous 13 games ? I don’t think so. Udogie was the notable difference getting himself into positions with his dangerous runs forward and was probably our best player today. The midfield of Gray & Bergvall were just poor. Brobbey caused us non-stop trouble. We just couldn’t handle him. How did have we yet another poor referee? 🤦🏻‍♂️ Kinsky at least looked calm and composed and made a very good save in that 1st half he’s so much better with his feet than Vicario. Richarlison, Solanke, and Muani didn’t link up well at all. Did we deserve to lose to a goal like that ? no but you don’t always get what you deserve.I’m not sure how we are going to escape this mess I really don’t,the confidence and body language of the players got worse as the game went on. 14 games now without a win We’ve lost 32 games now when conceding first did you ever believe we were going to score ? It’s going to take a super human effort from De Zerbi to save this club from going down. We hardly created any clear chances #COYS 🤍💙

Andy Green tells a story about Jared Young from their time in the Cubs organization: "We sent him down on the last day of the minor league season in Chicago one year. There was one more minor-league game the next day and we said, 'don't worry about it. You can go on home.' This guy likes to play so much, he said, 'can I drive to Iowa and play?' If you want to, but you can be done. I've never had a player do that in that situation. Most people are like, 'I'm leaving the big leagues, good - let's call it a season, let's move on. It's good enough.' He texted the Triple-A manager and said, 'I'm coming. I want to play. Can you put me in the lineup?' He hit a walk-off home run that day to end the minor league season. It's just indicative of the type of person he is, how much he loves being on the baseball field. He's loved in that clubhouse. He was loved in the Triple-A clubhouse. Any place he is, he's thought really highly of. He's just a great guy who had a great season, exceeded a lot of people's expectations. I don't think he exceeded mine at all, having had a lot of time with him through the years. I've believed all of this was possible and even more, but for him, I know it's a disappointing way to miss out on the last ten days of the year."

Red Sox could definitely use a bit more pop in the lineup but I think we're quickly nearing the point to where the lack of power is being overstated. People talking about this lineup like they're the Pirates or the Marlins. I think they're a middle of the pack power hitting team, not a bottom of the league power hitting team... -I think we all expect 20+ HRs from Roman Anthony, that may even be on the conservative side -Wilyer Abreu was well on his way to a 30 HR season last year prior to his calf injury. Ended up hitting 22 HRs -Willson Contreras has hit 20+ HRs in 4 of his last 5 seasons including last year -Trevor Story hit 25 HRs last year and should be good for another 20+ as long as he can stay on the field -I'd argue the Romy/Mayer platoon will add another 20 HRs, combined for 13 HRs last year despite only 127 ABs out of Mayer -Duran and Rafaela aren't big power guys but you can count on another ~15 a piece from each of them -Triston Casas should return at some point before the ASB. He's been an .800 OPS bat with good power when he's been healthy—29 HRs per 162 so far

SS Marek Houston (Wake Forest Baseball) is one of the premier college infielders in this year's Draft. After earning the starting SS job as a true Freshman, Houston had a standout summer with the Amsterdam Mohawks in which he hit .429/.557/.548 with 4 XBH and 13 RBIs in 17 games. He proceeded to break out last season to the tune of a .326/.434/.516 slash line with 16 2B, 8 HR, and 39 RBIs. Had an impressive summer that was split between the Cape and Team USA. Did what very few college players do anymore and started on the Cape, went to Team USA, and finished out the summer back on the Cape. Was a CCBL All-Star and hit .306/.465/.329 with more BB (26) than Ks (21). Lean, athletic build at 6'3" and 190-lbs. Pro body. Somewhat wide base in the box with a medium-high handset. Puts the majority of his weight on his back side. Minimal load in which he wraps his bat a bit. Small stride with average bat speed. Will eliminate his stride and widen his base in 2-strike counts. Takes a direct path to contact. Compact, contact-oriented operation. Does a nice job of consistently working inside the baseball. The most appealing part of Houston's offensive profile is how polished his hit tool is. Bat-to-ball skills are comfortably plus and last season he ran an overall IZ contact rate of 92%. Pitch recognition skills and swing decisions are both advanced, and this summer on the Cape he worked a remarkably low overall chase rate of 16% - including just 8% against SL. Will use the entire field. It's a bit of a cliche, but he hits the pitch where it's thrown. Hit tool is without a doubt a 55, but closer to a 60 than it is a 55. Biggest question mark right now is his impact and how much is in there. Flashed some pull side thump during the spring, but it's below-average power with wood. Again though, you're buying the hit tool. Adding impact both this year and beyond is key, though. Houston's calling card is undoubtedly his defense. Pro shortstop through and through. Silky smooth actions, range both up the middle and to his arm side. Comfortable attacking the baseball and throwing on the run/from different arm angles. Soft hands with an above-average arm. Instincts are high level. He does a great job of staying behind the baseball then working THROUGH it on a line. The epitome of "suave!" Top-40 overall type this July. (🎥: Wake Forest Baseball)

Spoke with 45+ coaches and watched 15 games in Fort Myers last weekend…. This baseball game took a turn for the worse in a hurry. The much bigger coach comes out to argue and gets in the umpire’s face, chest to chest. The umpire shoves him away and then the coach comes in and grabs him by the neck. The umpire takes a swing but misses and then finally the other coaches come onto the field to break everything up. Some people said that the umpire pushed the coach first, which he did. Others said when someone is chest to chest with you and in your face, he had every right to try and keep some space and distance between them. The umpire tells the coaches to call the cops because it was assault and one of the parents agrees with him. But someone said he pushed first so who is the assault on? This is wrong from every angle. Look at that poor catcher. He doesn’t even know what to do. Another day, another baseball game for young men ruined by the coach. What in the heck are we teaching our young players? It would take $500 bucks for me to even think of umpiring in this day and age. People are crazy. Who do you think was at fault? The umpire for shoving him first? The coach for arguing in the first place and grabbing him by the neck? Both of them? Sad state of affairs all around.

Drew Faurot (FSU Baseball) was one of the more underrated players in the CCBL this summer. The Seminole will likely start up the middle next spring after slashing .263/.342/.414 in 28 games with a wood bat in Brewster. The switch-hitting middle infielder has a similar stance as a LHH and RHH and shows a high leg kick upon load. It's a violent hack through the zone with exceptional bat speed and was able to show decent pull-side pop from both sides with 6 2B & 3 HR this summer. Faurot was third among qualified SS in hits (26), OPS (.756) and second in HR (3) and SLG% (.414). He looked smooth defensively and showed the ability to play SS or 2B after splitting time at both spots on the Cape. Solid range with average speed and a fringe arm at SS/2B but can get the ball out of his glove quickly. He should stick at either position at the pro level. Pitch recognition could improve as he struggled at times with the slider and change, resulting in a 55% miss and 42% miss rate, respectively. He had a 30.3 K% on the Cape but has a career a 40.9 FB% in college. Would also like to see some more line drives via hard hit balls after having a below average 42.6 GB% while at school. His second Cape stint showed that improvement is coming. Faurot's hard work ethic stands out. He's always watching film, taking hacks, fielding grounders - looking to improve in all aspects of his game. He's going to be an early Day 2 draft prospect in '25 with projectable power and versatility both offensively and defensively.

The Raiders are off to an incredible start and I have no doubt that Klint Kubiak will have the team continuing to play great. This sequence by their game management staff very easily could have lost them the game. On 3rd and 7, Justin Herbert gets hit while throwing, and they rule it a fumble that is recovered by the Chargers and brings up 4th and a half yard. Replays showed Herbert with the ball and his arm moving forward, and Gene Steratore noted that this should be an incompletion. The broadcast correctly was very surprised by the lack of challenge. The swing from 4th and 7 vs. 4th and a half yard is enormous here. For some reason, the coach appeared to not get the message to challenge the play. Not challenging likely cost them over 5% win probability. The Raiders then call a timeout, which is inexplicable in this moment, as you should throw the challenge flag if you plan on calling a timeout anyways. To top it off, they come out of the timeout on 4th and a half yard with 12 men on the field and give up a free 1st down. This simply cannot happen, someone should see it upstairs and communicate that immediately. The penalty mistake cost them another 20% in win probability! There will be very few game management sequences all year that decrease a team's chance of winning so much. Some things to iron out going forward.
