In 2019, Odessa beat her mother to death before decapitating her with knives and scissors. Police then found her daughter hiding in the attic of a property where she was arrested. Mrs Carey's head was discovered wrapped in a pillow case and a towel in a plastic bag in the cupboard under the sink at that house. Odessa had been discharged from a community mental health team overseeing her treatment just months before the incident.
