True, and not just people of color, different cultures and indigenous peoples everywhere. I lived most of my life in HI, worked w/local HI groups, there are books by outsiders treated as recorded history of the Islands but reflect a very perspective/reality from kanaka maole.

There was always so much to admire in this lady, not least of all her intellect.

Time passes, but some truths don’t fade—they echo. The same patterns, the same conversations, the same resistance to facing what’s right in front of us. We like to think we’ve moved far beyond certain moments in history…but sometimes it feels like we’re still standing in them.

Based on reading stats and literacy rates it’s startling how fast it’s becoming irrelevant.

Literacy rates are a separate yet related issue and frankly, this applies to far more than the written word. Sinners is an excellent, recent example of the disconnect she’s speaking about and it’s a movie.

Someone wrote the movie and read the script and followed the written instructions but point taken. I’m yet to make an argument for reading that doesn’t have a rebuttal why it’s unnecessary.

I’m just pointing out that the written word is executed in more ways than paper and the disconnect is still there so her main point resonates today. I would personally never even remotely suggest that literacy isn’t important or necessary.

Some ppl never change because they don't want to. Outside of the gap, Maya with this short fro kind of reminds me of Teyana Taylor.

To an extent, esp if they share similar experiences. It’s easy to see this exchange as one about race, but it’s really about culture. And in America, Black people must know certain trends and habits of others just for our survival. The same has not been required in reverse.
