Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods said that in considering a potential return to Venezuela, the company applies its long-term lens, with investments that must be “decades-deep” and deliver a “win-win-win” for Exxon, the government, and the population. But citing Exxon’s history in Venezuela where its assets were seized twice, and the country’s current legal and commercial framework, Woods said Exxon cannot determine that its presence would be a “win” for the company and its shareholders. Under current conditions, he said, Venezuela is “uninvestable.” He said he could not offer a view at this time on whether Exxon’s return would benefit the Venezuelan people or the government, but stressed that “it has to be a win for the people. We have to be wanted there,” adding that those conditions are necessary for stable, long-term investment.
