@20 We stand with everyone who opposes CA3. Our position is simple, we do not support any political direction that concentrates power in a way that resembles a dynasty. Leadership should remain accountable, transparent, and grounded in democratic principles.

OPEN LETTER To: Zimbabwe Defence Forces Hon. Retired Army Generals Hon. War Veterans Opposition Political Parties of Zimbabwe Zimbabwe Business Community RE: DEFENDING OUR CONSTITUTION – NATIONAL SHUTDOWN (4–8 MAY 2026) We, the people of Zimbabwe, write to you at a defining moment in the history of our nation. Our Constitution — the supreme expression of the will of the people — is under threat from the very individuals entrusted to protect and uphold it. Zimbabweans did not sacrifice for independence, nor vote for democratic governance, only to witness the gradual erosion of the constitutional order that guarantees our freedoms, our voice, and our future. The regime may speak of “meticulous achievements,” “stability,” and “continuity.” It may attempt to justify constitutional changes by portraying elections as toxic or destabilising. But no justification can legitimise the erosion of constitutional democracy. The Constitution does not belong to politicians. It belongs to the people of Zimbabwe. For this reason, we firmly state that any attempt to alter the foundations of our democracy — particularly those affecting presidential terms, electoral processes, or the balance of power — must be subjected to the direct will of the people through a national referendum. Even where existing legal frameworks may not explicitly require such a process, the magnitude and permanence of these proposed changes demand nothing less than the voice of the people through a national referendum. It must never become normal in Zimbabwe for an elected leader to manipulate laws for the purpose of extending personal rule. Our nation cannot accept a future where leadership is maintained through legal engineering rather than democratic consent. Despite repeated claims of national progress, the lived reality of Zimbabweans remains one of economic hardship, systemic corruption, and declining public confidence in national institutions. For this reason, from Monday 4 May to Friday 8 May 2026, Zimbabweans across the country will participate in a peaceful national stay-away. During this week: * Citizens will remain at home in peaceful protest. * Communities will reflect on the future of our country. * Zimbabweans will raise awareness locally, regionally, and internationally about the constitutional crisis facing our nation. This is not an act of rebellion. It is an act of constitutional defence. We therefore appeal to: The Zimbabwe Defence Forces — to remember that your ultimate oath is to the Constitution and the people of Zimbabwe. Retired Generals and War Veterans — custodians of the liberation legacy — to stand on the side of constitutionalism and the democratic aspirations for which so many sacrificed. Opposition Political Parties — to unite in defending the Constitution above all political interests. The Zimbabwean Business Community — whose stability depends upon the rule of law — should stand with the people in safeguarding democratic governance. We call upon all of you to support and protect the citizens of Zimbabwe as they peacefully assert their constitutional rights. The people of Zimbabwe refuse to exchange their voices for the illusion of stability. We refuse to remain silent in order to maintain manufactured peace. History will remember those who stood for the Constitution when it mattered most. Zimbabwe belongs to all of us. Together, we must defend it. We are together in this. We salute you. 🫡
