Meet Sprout: The NYC-Built Humanoid Designed to Live Among Us 🤖🫶 New York-based Fauna Robotics just pulled the curtain back on Sprout, a humanoid platform built specifically for the spaces we actually live in—homes, schools, and offices. Standing 3.5 feet tall (approx. 107 cm), Sprout isn't a shrunk-down factory machine; it’s a lightweight, soft-touch robot designed with zero pinch points or sharp edges. ➤ Built for Builders: This is a "canvas" for developers. Fauna provides movement, perception, and navigation right out of the box, allowing researchers to skip the basics and focus on high-level apps like manipulation and voice interfaces without worrying about the robot falling over. ➤ Socially Approachable: Sprout features an expressive face to communicate intent and moves quietly to blend into social settings. Instead of keeping humans behind safety cages, the team designed Sprout to be something people actually want to lean in and say hello to. ➤ A Trustworthy Foundation: With 80% of the workforce in services, Fauna is targeting urgent needs in healthcare and eldercare. By keeping engineering and manufacturing in NYC, veterans from Meta, DeepMind, and Amazon are building a durable, affordable foundation for the future of human-robot interaction. A cute humanoid robot from NYC Fauna Robotics has released a humanoid robot called Sprout, which is approximately 1 meter tall, lightweight, quiet, and features no dangerous edges and soft skin. Its appearance and interactions are designed to be "approachable," like a social companion. It is currently offered as a general-purpose robotics platform for developers, providing basic movement, perception, navigation, and expression capabilities, allowing real-world use cases to emerge within the community. Many humanoid robots are born in factories and warehouses, but Fauna Robotics aims to bring humanoid robots back into human living spaces. Fauna believes that if humanoid robots are to become as ubiquitous as computers and mobile phones in the future, the starting point must be a safe, friendly form suitable for homes, schools, and offices. Sprout is their first step in this direction.

🚨 Amazon has acquired Fauna Robotics, marking its second robotics acquisition in under a month. The move extends Amazon’s robotics strategy beyond fulfillment and further into the home, where safety, adaptability, and human interaction are central. Fauna’s soft-bodied humanoids are built for shared environments, a clear contrast to industrial systems and a better fit for consumer use cases. Taken together, these moves point to a more coordinated strategy across the humanoid stack, from hardware to deployment. The pace of consolidation is increasing, with strategic buyers moving earlier into the market.

The 120kg, wheeled Torobo humanoid robot Has a bipedal sibling. 東京ロボティクス株式会社 is testing this bipedal humanoid robot to enable it to walk in a human-like manner. As is evident, it is significantly lighter than its wheeled counterpart. Torobo is primarily designed for industrial applications, such as lifting and grasping heavy objects. The bipedal Torobo will offer enhanced versatility. In the future, Tokyo Robotics plans to integrate AI capabilities, enabling the robot to make autonomous decisions and take independent action.

Another humanoid robotics startup, Norway-based Physical Robotics, is out of stealth. The company was founded by Phuong Nguyen, a co-founder of Halodi Robotics (now rebranded as 1X Technologies). He was Chief Science Officer at Halodi for eight years, leading the development of the EVE robot. The new company's mission is to “create a generation of robots that live in harmony with humans in the physical world, enhancing the quality of human life.” Last week, the company announced the closing of a $4 million seed round. Here's the upper body concept of their humanoid, the π robot.

A new member joins the European humanoid robot team. German company Agile Robotics has launched its first industrial humanoid robot, Agile One, featuring intuitive human-robot interaction, dexterous hands (for grasping small screws and touching the screen), and AI-driven operation trained in the real world. It performs tasks such as material collection, handling, picking and placing, loading and unloading machine tools, tool handling, and precision operations. The emergence of humanoid robots by industrial robot companies is a natural progression; they are designed for areas inaccessible to traditional robotic arms and industrial robots, extending operational systems and enhancing business collaboration capabilities. Agile One will be manufactured in Germany in early 2026 and deployed for on-site training at customers to enhance its AI model capabilities. Soon, Europe will enter its second wave of automation driven by intelligent technology.

Another new humanoid robot is here. This headless humanoid robot is called Calvin-40. It is the first industrial humanoid robot developed by the French company Wandercraft. It is human-sized and voice-controlled. It is mainly used in manufacturing factories, but can also be used for medical care. It is worth mentioning that its hands can switch to end effectors such as suction cups, grippers, and dexterous hands to adapt to the needs.

Humanoid robot packer Tianyi, TienKung's sibling, is another wheeled humanoid robot from the Beijing Humanoid Robotics Innovation Center. Demonstrating its potential as a packer. It can autonomously complete packing tasks such as scanning barcodes, removing boxes, and affixing labels, working with both hands. In the future, it will solve the problem of handling complex and scattered express packaging that currently requires a large amount of manpower. Of course, it is still a bit slow, and its efficiency needs improvement. This humanoid robot is 1.65 meters tall and weighs 88 kg. With its height-adjustable body and flexible wheeled movement, it is also suitable for service scenarios such as indoor inspections in factories and office buildings, and serving as a showroom guide.

More and more humanoid robot kiosks are appearing in China. Yesterday, I passed by a subway entrance in Guangzhou and experienced a retail kiosk operated by a humanoid robot again, buying a bottle of water. The process was the same: select items on a screen, scan a QR code for mobile payment, and the humanoid robot retrieves the product. (However, it didn't interact with me at all.) I looked it up, and the wheeled humanoid robot is named S1, from AutoLife Robotics in Shenzhen. It uses omnidirectional wheels for movement and a lifting body. It's 1-1.6m tall, weighs 72kg, and has a 10-hour battery life. A single arm can carry 3-5kg. Furthermore, this humanoid robot is suitable for lightweight tasks in retail, convenience stores, supermarkets, and warehouse sorting.

New York school district to become one of the first in the United States to introduce a humanoid robot in the classroom. 'Sally' will have a Western New York accent and will teach 11th and 12th-grade students at Salamanca High School. Sally costs less than the average teacher's salary in New York, with a price tag of $57,000. The robot has brown hair, and can move its arms and legs, but will not be able to walk around the classroom. Students will be able to log in so the humanoid can recognize students and their previous interactions. The humanoid will be helping teach coding, robotics, and AI classes. The school district promises that robots will "never" replace human teachers. ‘Sally’ is made by Realbotix, which also produces "companion" robots. What are we doing here?
