Kamala Harris: We cannot despair. We cannot despair. The nature of a democracy is such that I think there's a duality. On the one hand, there's an incredible strength when our democracy is intact. An incredible strength in what it does to protect the freedoms and rights of its people. Oh, there's great strength in that. And it is very fragile. It is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it. And so that's the moment we're in. And I say do not despair because in a democracy, as long as we can keep it, in our democracy the people, every individual has the power to make a decision about what this will be. And so let's not feel powerless. Because then we have been defeated. And that's not our character as the American people. We are not one to be defeated. We rise to a moment and we stand on broad shoulders of people who have fought this fight before for our country. And in many ways let us look at the challenge then that we are being presented and not be overwhelmed by it. The baton is now in our hands, to fight for, not against, but for this country we love.

One last point from Pope Leo’s letter to us: he talks about the reasons to thank God for the United States of America, and the last one he mentions is unity. We are a nation that has always tried to stay together. Diversity? You bet. Disagreement? You bet! Sometimes heated debate. But we always are one nation under God! That source of unity is one of the major reasons for the strength and vitality of the America for which we thank God as we continue to celebrate our 250th Anniversary. On America’s 250th birthday, this message feels just as important today as when I first shared it. I love this country. I believe in this country. And that’s exactly why I’ll never stop pushing it to be its very best. Two hundred and fifty years ago, our founders put to paper a radical idea: that all people are created equal and endowed with certain unalienable rights. Those words have inspired generations to build a more perfect Union, even when America itself fell short of that promise. Our history has never been a straight line. It has been a constant struggle to close the gap between our ideals and our reality. Every generation has had to fight to expand freedom, strengthen democracy, and ensure that “We the People” truly means all the people. That work isn’t finished. It’s our turn now. So today, I celebrate America, not because we’re perfect, but because I believe in our capacity to keep growing, keep striving, and keep bending the arc of this nation toward justice.
