Kamala Harris: We cannot despair. We cannot despair. The nature of a democracy is such that I think there's a duality. On the one hand, there's an incredible strength when our democracy is intact. An incredible strength in what it does to protect the freedoms and rights of its people. Oh, there's great strength in that. And it is very fragile. It is only as strong as our willingness to fight for it. And so that's the moment we're in. And I say do not despair because in a democracy, as long as we can keep it, in our democracy the people, every individual has the power to make a decision about what this will be. And so let's not feel powerless. Because then we have been defeated. And that's not our character as the American people. We are not one to be defeated. We rise to a moment and we stand on broad shoulders of people who have fought this fight before for our country. And in many ways let us look at the challenge then that we are being presented and not be overwhelmed by it. The baton is now in our hands, to fight for, not against, but for this country we love.

On the eve of America's 250th birthday, I was honored to visit the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and have a conversation with his great-great-grandson Ted Roosevelt V on what this day means. 250 years ago, a group of imperfect people did something extraordinary. They declared that liberty belonged to the people, not a king, and that America's future would always be determined by its citizens. The American story is still being written. Every generation has had to defend, strengthen, and extend the American promise. The story of America isn't that we've always lived up to our ideals. It's that we've never stopped striving to. That's what makes this country exceptional. As we celebrate 250 years of independence, let's remember that patriotism isn't about pretending America is perfect. It's about believing America is worth fighting for, worth improving, and worth passing on stronger than we found it. Our most successful presidents understood that and kept their eyes focused on the prize: America.

Black Americans have fought in every war this country has ever had. We even fought in the Civil War that ultimately secured our freedom. No nation is perfect, and every country has its flaws, but I still believe the United States is the greatest nation on Earth. There is no place I’d rather live. Today, I’ll be celebrating the Fourth of July with my friends and family, enjoying barbecue and watching fireworks just like millions of other Americans. If you don’t want to celebrate, that’s your choice. But if you have a problem with those of us who do, keep that negativity to yourself. And we have a president now that understands not only the power of prayer, but the importance of people in America praying and giving back to our foundation. And so I'm honored to just be a part of it, that every single week that you can get together with 10 people, and pray together. Think about it. We have a million people a week praying for our country. Mountains move when the people of God pray.
