I read this very emotional 😭 message from a young man who has been dismissed by the NDC Government and is struggling to survive. Samuel Awuku received this message after his advocacy for the close to 35,000 young Ghanaians whose careers have been unjustifiably terminated by the insensitive NDC Government. All the young man and his fellow victims are asking of us, is for all of us to join the advocacy and seek for mercy on their behalf from the government. Yara turned one in March. She's the fourth calf of Yatta – the very first orphan we raised to full independence at our Ithumba Reintegration Unit in northern Tsavo. Yara was born in the bush on 29 March 2025. Hours later, Yatta walked Yara up to the stockades alone, no entourage, to show her to the Keepers who'd raised her. It's since become a tradition among nearly all the orphans we raise when they start a family! Yatta was rescued in 1999 from the Yatta Plateau, weeks old, after her mother was killed by poachers for her ivory. She is now a matriarch in her own right – four calves, a granddaughter, and a herd around her. All living wild. When the leaders of Mother Emanuel AME asked to pray for me earlier this month, I was reminded of the kindness they have shown me, my family, and others for years. Nearly nine years ago, the congregation of Mother Emanuel AME invited a stranger into their church to pray with them. The word of God was pierced by bullets in hate and rage, propelled by not just gunpowder but by a poison that has, for too long, haunted this nation. Two days after the service of Reverend Pinckney, my family worshiped with them to show our solidarity. But my family also needed to be healed. We didn’t even realize how badly. We had just buried my son, Beau, a veteran who was exposed and died because of the burn pits in Iraq for a year. We were in more pain than we knew. We came to offer comfort, but my family received comfort from the congregation of Mother Emanuel. As I listened in the pews, spent time with the families, visited Reverend Pinckney’s office, and visited the memorial for the victims outside, my family and I grew stronger. We prayed together. We grieved together. We found hope together. And now, it reminds me that, through our pain, each of us must find purpose.

I had the privilege of attending the ‘Dawat-e-Iftar’ event organised by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. It was a deeply moving moment of collective prayer, reflection, and togetherness Bengal’s identity has always been shaped by harmony and shared heritage. In this sacred land, the songs of universalism by Kobiguru Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam resonate in unison with the timeless message of unity and brotherhood preached by Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda. Tina has been struggling badly with her skin the last couple of days. It’s a result of the kidneys failing. So today with the vets we decided to start some injections and pills to help ease her irritation. They won’t be good for the kidneys but it’s all about quality of life for Tina now. All other dogs are taken care of and we are going to watch the sunset from her hammock and I’ll read her some of the 100s of lovely messages people send. She’s not meant to have treats but I’m going to give her a few because sometimes you just have to live in the moment. She genuinely loves this hammock more than anything in the world. Neither of us would choose to be anywhere else right now 🥰🙏
