Case in point: each morning our mini-matriarch checks on the youngest orphans in their stables before the herd heads out. In June she kept our newest rescue, tiny Zuri, back from the mud wallow, standing guard at its edge – and when Pardamat knocked the little one over, Muridjo drove him off and his time-out lasted hours. Eight months after she left with a wild boyfriend, Twiggy came back to say hello. She made straight for the stables, where she stooped her head to each of her former Keepers in turn. Then she was down at the mud bath with the orphaned elephants and loitering in the gardens with the smaller orphans, as though the past eight months spent roaming the wild had never happened. Shocking footage shows an American woman shortly after her rescue, having been found by a shepherd chained to a tree for 40 days and left to die in an Indian jungle. Lalita Kayi Kumar, a 50-year-old US citizen, was found with her passport and other identifying documents. She was immediately rushed to a local hospital for urgent treatment. At the hospital, she managed to write a message detailing her ordeal, accusing her husband of abandoning her in the forest for 40 days. An attempted murder case has been launched against her husband.

Our friendly girl Muridjo has found the perfect way to spend the quiet afternoon hours - lying calmly, surrounded by birdsong, as the rest of the Nairobi orphan herd eat, dust bath, and play pushing games. A friend to all, Muridjo has started to show a more maternal side recently, spending time looking after little Wamata or our newest arrival Kipekee. It’s lovely to witness, in an elephant who’s come so far since her rescue in 2022. Read her story at:

As the sun sets she’s on her final stretch of her run and she’s approaching where she started out again. She sees two men on the sidewalk and right as she is about to run past them they try to grab her and take her, one of the men lunge at her as to almost tackle her and stop her in her tracks. Even after running for miles she musters up the strength in her to run away as fast as she can. It’s safe to say this is why people use treadmills but if this was you would this discourage you from running outside again, what would you do?

Serenget is always the last to finish her milk. She is one of the younger orphans at our Voi Reintegration Unit in Tsavo and she has her own way of doing things. Rather than gulping from the bottle like the others, she takes it slowly – the Keepers fill the very tip of her trunk with milk, so she can pour every drop carefully into her mouth at her own pace. Two bottles takes her a good while. Every orphan drinks up to 24 litres a day, at whatever pace suits them. A gift of milk from our Wish List can help feed an orphan like Serenget:
