A coalition of concerned Zongo youth in Nima and surrounding communities has launched an all out campaign against substance abuse and crime in Zongo communities. The campaign which forms a larger part of renewed efforts in redefining ‘zongos’ has targeted individuals known in the local communities as drug peddlers and suppliers of substances, which have left majority of the youth in addiction. South Korea was once known as a drug-free country, where there was no concept of even recreational drug use in everyday life, and drug-related deaths or addiction were virtually unheard of. That reality, however, is rapidly disappearing. Just over a decade ago, in 2014, approximately 9,984 drug offenders were apprehended. By 2023, that number had risen to 27,611, nearly a threefold increase. Recently, a large-scale Chinese drug trafficking network was uncovered. The group smuggled methamphetamine into South Korea via Southeast Asia—an amount sufficient to supply forty thousand people at once. The gang planned to hire a South Korean man to transport the drugs to Seoul, but the man, suspecting the bag might contain explosives, immediately reported it to the police. Today, on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking - 2026, I had the honour of inaugurating the Anti-Drug Awareness Week organised by the Hyderabad Police Commissionerate at the ICCC, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad. The fight against drugs is not just a police priority it is a societal responsibility. I want to be very clear, the deadline is now. I have asked every officer, from Home Guard level to DGP, to remain committed to this fight so that our own children do not fall prey to it. What was once a transit point for drug trafficking has now become a consumption zone. Post-COVID, drug consumption has risen in both urban and rural areas. Our children are being targeted traffickers are going as far as mixing narcotics in chocolates and biscuits to hook young minds. This is nothing short of an anti-national activity. This is more dangerous than terrorism or Naxalism today and we must treat it with the same urgency. If there is no demand, there will be no supply. Reducing demand is our collective responsibility. I took an oath today along with my officers and the students present eradicating drugs is our priority, and EAGLE Force is in full action. We are working in close coordination with the School Education Department, DRI, Enforcement Directorate, and Customs to tackle this at every level. The Education Department has been asked to establish Anti-Drug Safety Clubs in every educational institution. Schools that fail to comply will risk losing their recognition. I urge every parent to monitor their children closely, and appeal to families and society to help rehabilitate addicts through de-addiction centres. Keeping our youth away from drugs is the foundation for a golden future of our nation.
