Meet our new bundle of baby boy joy — Sam Houston! 🩵🐘 We’re thrilled to share that the Zoo welcomed a healthy male Asian elephant calf to mom, Bluebell, in the early morning hours of April 1. The calf’s father is Romeo, making him a full sibling to 3-year-old Travis and half-sibling to 8-month-old Lady Bird and 4-year-old Brazos. Weighing in at 285 pounds and standing 36 inches tall at birth, this not-so-little one is the largest calf in Zoo history. Keeping with our tradition of Texas-themed names for Zoo-born elephants and noting his remarkable size, Sam Houston’s name honors one of the state’s most iconic figures and represents strength and a lasting legacy. And the best part is … beginning TODAY, guests can see Sam Houston in the main habitat at Elephant Springs daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (afternoon naps are still a must for little Sam Houston!). More to come on him later! 🩶

The story of “Burrito” the baby yak. While riding through the Mongolian mountains, Sam and Luke found him lost and confused, a few kilometers from the rest of his herd. With wolves in the hills, the calf needed help getting home, so he turned him into a burrito and tucked him into his pannier for the ride back to mom. 🐻💦 Water bears … indoor edition! Our juvenile bears, Cinnamon and Raisin, can’t seem to get enough pool time on-habitat. Plus, they have their very own pool inside, too! Whenever they head to their behind-the-scenes spaces for naps, habitat cleaning, meals or inclement weather, they still have a place to splish and splash! A visitor decided to introduce his baby son to extreme practices from infancy and jumped into the freezing water with him. Afterward, the center’s director, Azamat Yakupov, awarded the already wrapped up baby with a medal, praising the little “ice swimmer” for his courage. Our training assistant Sam Doyle has always struggled with his speech and confidence. Sam overcame a stammer in his teens, but lost his voice again through the trauma of working for the NHS at the Manchester terror attacks. He came to the club to try to regain his confidence and says being part of our squad has given him his voice back. Sam shared a special moment with the team on Sunday. We are #strongertogether ❤️
