Meet our new little bundle of quills! 🫶 The Zoo welcomed a baby prehensile-tailed porcupine, or porcupette, in the early morning hours of Friday, March 27 to mom Piper and dad Quilliam. Our teeny porcupette is bonding with mom, sleeping most of the day, nursing well and already growing its first quills! 🥹 This little one weighed about a pound at birth and is already growing and gaining weight quickly — now about the size of a loaf of sandwich bread. 🍞 Our prehensile-tailed porcupines are ambassador animals here at the Zoo, meaning they are not in a publicly visible space. However, there are a few different ways you might get to meet them (although not this littlest one just yet!), sign up for a Zoo education program, Quills & Thrills behind-the-scenes experience or attend a Stage Show, where they may make an appearance!

SURPRISE — we’re seeing double! 🦒🦒 Two weeks ago, we shared that the Zoo welcomed a female giraffe calf and that our friends at the TODAY Show were helping us pick her name … but the evening following that announcement, we welcomed a SECOND female calf! 🥹💕 Born just 13 days apart, the girls share the same dad, Apollo, but have different moms — Kala welcomed the first calf, and Acacia welcomed the newest little one. And now, they're both out on habitat with the herd! After spending time bonding with their moms and meeting the rest of the giraffe herd behind the scenes, our adorable duo has officially made their African Savanna debut (with a little soft launch yesterday 🤭). We're also excited to share that TODAY has officially announced the winning name for Kala's calf: Kumi! Kumi is Swahili for "10," honoring the fact that she is Kala's 10th calf. We're still finalizing a name for Acacia's little girl, but she's already easy to spot! Acacia is a Rothschild's giraffe, while a majority of our herd is made up of reticulated giraffes. She passed along a bit of her unique patterning to her calf through the darker brown coloring on her lower legs. We've affectionately nicknamed them her "shin guards" since she arrived during the Summer of Soccer in DFW. ⚽️🦒 We can't wait to watch these two girls grow up together — and now you can, too! 🥰

🐻💦 Water bears … indoor edition! Our juvenile bears, Cinnamon and Raisin, can’t seem to get enough pool time on-habitat. Plus, they have their very own pool inside, too! Whenever they head to their behind-the-scenes spaces for naps, habitat cleaning, meals or inclement weather, they still have a place to splish and splash! An entry from Sam Houston’s baby diary: his very first swim! 🥹🌊 Before making his debut in the public habitat, Sam Houston and his mom, Bluebell, took a few swims in one of the behind-the-scenes pools. The shallow water helped him get used to using his trunk in the water, while also helping Bluebell feel more comfortable with him around the pool. 💙 Safe to say … we may have a water baby on our hands. 👀 📸: Keeper Gabby

Wiggly little lizards! 🦎 Each day, our dedicated staff carefully and gently weigh every Texas horned lizard hatchling to track and monitor their growth and development. These tiny lizards - just 1 to 2 weeks old - are growing now in preparation for their release this fall!

Meet our new bundle of baby boy joy — Sam Houston! 🩵🐘 We’re thrilled to share that the Zoo welcomed a healthy male Asian elephant calf to mom, Bluebell, in the early morning hours of April 1. The calf’s father is Romeo, making him a full sibling to 3-year-old Travis and half-sibling to 8-month-old Lady Bird and 4-year-old Brazos. Weighing in at 285 pounds and standing 36 inches tall at birth, this not-so-little one is the largest calf in Zoo history. Keeping with our tradition of Texas-themed names for Zoo-born elephants and noting his remarkable size, Sam Houston’s name honors one of the state’s most iconic figures and represents strength and a lasting legacy. And the best part is … beginning TODAY, guests can see Sam Houston in the main habitat at Elephant Springs daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (afternoon naps are still a must for little Sam Houston!). An Argentine fútbol star is taking the field, but here at the Zoo, we have our very own soccer superstar: Bocce, the three-banded armadillo. ⚽️⭐️ He’s native to Argentina 🇦🇷, has fancy footwork, a mean bicycle kick and a knack for playing up a foul. Isn’t he a star?! 👏

It’s a ….. GIRL!! 💗🌸🩷🌷💕 Meet Persephone, our little prehensile-tailed porcupette ✨girl✨! Her name continues the P-theme like her mom, Piper and big sister, Penelope! It’s hard to believe she is already 2 months old & almost fully quilled, she’s growing too fast! 🥹🫶 While our porcupine family is not in a publicly visible habitat, they can be seen (though not this littlest one yet) during a Quills & Thrills behind the scenes experience and education or outreach program! 🥳

Cheetah self-care spotted! 🐆 Like most cat species, cheetahs spend a good chunk of their day grooming and have special adaptations just for it! Their tongues are covered in tiny hook-shaped bumps called papillae that are designed to remove dirt, insects and loose fur, leaving them with a clean, sleek coat. 🛀 For cheetahs, grooming is also social! In this video captured by Keeper Lorenda, our brother duo is participating in social grooming which helps them both stay polished while strengthening their bond. 🤎

We’re quilly excited to tell you all about the newest (and cutest) arrival at the Zoo – meet our adorable baby prehensile-tailed porcupine, called a porcupette! 🫶 Born in the early morning hours of May 17 to parents Piper and Quilliam, this little one weighed just 404 grams, about the size of a loaf of sandwich bread. 🥹 Baby porcupines are born with soft, red hair, although they immediately begin to grow their hard, protective quills. In just a few weeks, this little porcupette will be fully quilled! For now, the baby is bonding with mom and nursing behind the scenes. Our animal care team is weighing the tiny tot daily to monitor its growth, and it’s already nearly doubled in size! A quill DNA test must be done in order to determine if our petite porcupine is male or female … so stay tuned for Piper’s little one’s gender reveal – and name – in the coming weeks! 🩵🩷

A little munching & some zoomies on her new climbing structure for our now ONE-year-old, Penelope! 🦔🎉 She may look like a full-grown porcupine, but she still has all the playfulness and energy of a little one! Plus, she’s a class favorite during our education programs, of course!

He’s just a baby! 🥹🩵 A new little giraffe calf has joined the herd! Born in the early morning hours of Oct. 6, this little boy stood at only 5’8” at birth, making him one of the smallest calves we’ve had. But he’s already growing tall, gaining weight & today — joining the herd out on habitat! More to come on this short stack soon! 🥞

Lady Bird’s first snow! 🐘❄️ As temps rose above freezing today, some of our animals stepped out to explore the snow. Lady Bird found her own snowy mound and looked to be having a blast! While she played, our Zoo crew worked hard clearing ice and snow from paths and boardwalks. While progress was made, more work is still needed before we feel that we can safely reopen, so we will remain closed tomorrow, Wednesday Jan. 28. We appreciate your patience and can’t wait to welcome you back! 💙

Drumroll please 🥁🥁🥁 and reveal … our tiny masked lapwing chicks! The masked lapwing is a common bird species native to Australia, New Zealand & Papua New Guinea. Here at the Zoo, these little ones can be spotted along the path in our Predators of Asia & Africa habitat. Keep your eyes peeled 👀 — these tiny chicks are often found close to (or even tucked under!) their parents. This species is known for being attentive and protective parents, just like you see here! And aren’t those chicks just the cutest? 🐣
