Benjamin, who is Head Keeper of our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, has been with us for 25 years. Rapsu was rescued 20 years ago from Meru National Park, as a starving, frightened orphan. Ithumba isn't only a home for the orphans we raise. Wild bulls drift through all the time – drinking at the troughs, sharing a mouthful of lucerne with the dependent orphans, some lingering to spar with the ex-orphans before heading back out into Tsavo. They come because, over the years, they've learned it's safe. The clearest proof is a bull we call Dad, a great tusker who has fathered at least two of our wild-born calves. Back in 2015, Dad arrived carrying wounds from a poisoned arrow – and he'd brought two injured companions with him. It's not hard to conclude he led them to Ithumba because he understood they'd be helped there. All three were treated and recovered. It remains a great privilege each time we see a wild elephant take sanctuary around Ithumba and each visit reaffirms a bond of trust we have with them. After nearly four years away, ex-orphan Tundani just returned home for a visit! The Voi dependent orphans were awed to be in the presence of a wise older brother – and he seemed to enjoy all the adoration. Watch to the end and you’ll see that he even popped by to meet Chapeyu, who is still recovering from his spear injury in ‘Voi hospital.’ We rescued Tundani back in 2013, when he was just a year old. He was found alone and had clearly been struggling to survive. He has always been a remarkably calm and composed bull – and after such a long time away, it is wonderful to see how he is thriving. Our SWT/KWS Veterinary Units exist to alleviate animal suffering. This successful operation to save a snared elephant's trunk earlier this year is a powerful reminder of the difference they make. The bull had lived with a snare slicing around his trunk for months. Left untended, it likely would have severed his trunk. His plight was spotted when our SWT helicopter was called to shepherd him off community land, into the safety of Tsavo East National Park. In the process, our pilot noticed a poacher’s snare, cinched tight around his trunk. The SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit rushed to the scene and, with support from our Aerial Unit, darted the patient. From there, treatment was swift and straightforward. The snare had been in place for at least three months, and in that time, the wound had completely healed over. Fortunately, a single snip of the snare was all it took to save the trunk. Despite the lasting damage, the bull's trunk will grow normally and he will be able to lead a full and healthy life. As snare victim Enkesha has demonstrated, even with holes or scar tissue, elephants can adapt to use their trunks to eat and drink without issue. To date, more than 3,800 elephants – including this bull – have been offered life-saving treatment by our SWT/KWS Veterinary Units. In September 2022, we made an unusual call: we sent our newest rescue – a two-year-old orphan of drought – straight to our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit, bypassing the Nursery. Daylight was running out, Umani was close to his place of reintegration, and we thought the older orphans would be a good fit for him. Our ex-orphan Lima Lima had been away in the forest for three days, yet somehow she still knew... the day Kapei arrived, she walked straight up to his stockade and demanded the Keepers let her in. She spent hours with him, sharing his lucerne, before slipping back out. That formative moment set the tone for Kapei's recovery – from then on, he always knew he had a herd behind him. More recently, he has started to join them in the wild too, spending multiple days away from his Keepers at a time. Speared in a case of human-wildlife conflict — this lion was in a dire situation. Reported by Big Life, our fixed-wing pilot confirmed his location, allowing the SWT helicopter to collect and transport the SWT/KWS Mobile Vet Unit to the scene. The lion lying close to a school, deep within community land on Mbirikani Group Ranch. He had a serious spear wound to his shoulder, and in his compromised state had been targeted by rival male lions, who’d left him riddled with fight wounds! Dr Lawi darted the patient, so he could be transported into a protected area. It was here the vet treated his extensive injuries: Dr Lawi is hopeful he will make a full recovery. Our thanks to Big Life and Lion Guardians, who supported the treatment and will continue to monitor the progress of this king of the jungle. The bull had trodden on spikes, which some farmers put around their land to deter elephants. A spike had pierced through his front right and back left foot. Our pilot flew to the scene and found a young bull — seven or eight years old — with a serious wound to his front ankle joint. He cut a lonely figure, trying his best to hobble along. The injury was dire, and at his age, he was also highly vulnerable to lions. The plan was for the SWT/KWS Tsavo Vet Unit to treat him in the field and let him heal. But as the operation unfolded, it became clear he was on a fine line between life and death. The spear wound was terribly infected, compromising the joint. If the bull was to have any hope of survival, multiple follow-ups would be required. To preserve the bull’s life and give him the care he needed, Dr. Limo deemed it necessary to bring him to our Voi Reintegration Unit. While certainly older than a typical orphan rescue, he fell into the adolescent age bracket and would be in good company among our Voi orphan herd. This is the story of Arthur the Brave, a courageous little rhino who was rescued in 2018. At just four weeks old, poachers brutally killed his mother, and this tiny Rhino calf tried to protect her. For his bravery, he received multiple machete wounds to his back and foot. Fortunately, rangers found him in time and immediately brought him to Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary, where he was admitted to the ICU for an extensive period of intensive care and wound treatment. Despite his severe injuries, Arthur was a little ray of sunshine from the very first day. He quickly learned to trust his care team, patiently allowing them to clean and dress his wounds while he happily drank his bottle. He has come a very long way over the years. Today, all that remains of Arthur’s traumatic start to life is the scar on his back. Mid-flight to help the elephants, we received an urgent call from Kenya Wildlife Service: An infant elephant was trapped in a well, with frantic mother standing guard and not allowing anyone to get close to rescue him. We immediately diverted to the scene. Pilot Hamish dropped the team nearby, then used the helicopter to shepherd the mother away from the well. On the ground, Roan leapt into the water and, with a few determined pushes, managed to heave the calf to freedom. The baby bolted toward his mum and the team watched them happily reunite, before returning to their original task: helping the two arrowed elephants. Both were successfully darted and treated by the SWT/KWS Tsavo Vet Unit, rounding out the afternoon with three successful, life-saving operations. Nine years on from his rescue, Maktao is a strapping young male living wild in the Kibwezi Forest – a bull who, we hope, might eventually sire calves of his own. That journey from vulnerable baby to stately bull took many many milk feeds, Keepers sleeping beside him, and years of reintegration at our Umani Springs Unit. On 27th February, we mobilised a rescue with the KWS – but just before our helicopter arrived, he zigzagged past everyone on the ground and vanished. Two days later, following a monumental storm, two local Maasai men found and secured the calf - it was a miracle to find him still alive. We raced to the scene and flew him to our Kaluku Unit. There we discovered another twist in Bungalu’s story: He had deep claw marks laced across his back. The wounds had scarred over, but he had clearly been pursued by lions. Bungalu was a hard-won case. He was skin-and-bones, riddled with ulcers and parasites. For weeks, he remained in fight-or-flight mode, barely sleeping as he rocked in his stable. But despite all he’d been through, Bungalu embraced his Keepers from the outset. He was visibly relieved to be part of a family again. ⭐️ Bungalu’s care is entirely funded by donations. Earlier this year, a speared tusker took us on a true Tsavo odyssey: it took a month and a hundred kilometres of tracking to find him, plus the coordinated efforts of multiple SWT teams, in order to treat him. In pursuit of alleviating wildlife suffering, our teams do not give up! The initial report came in late at night. Our pilot took off at first light to locate him, but he had evaporated into the wilderness. For the next two weeks, we extensively patrolled the area, but he was nowhere to be found – no small feat for huge elephant. We had a breakthrough a month later when another SWT/KWS Anti-Poaching Team spotted a bull with the same injury. Comparing photos of the two, we knew it had to be the same elephant. Incredibly, he had walked more than 95 kilometres (60 miles) from the initial sighting. Again, it was late in the evening, so we organised a treatment for the following morning. Earlier this year, a speared tusker took us on a true Tsavo odyssey: it took a month and a hundred kilometres of tracking to find him, plus the coordinated efforts of multiple SWT teams, in order to treat him. In pursuit of alleviating wildlife suffering, our teams do not give up! The initial report came in late at night. Our pilot took off at first light to locate him, but he had evaporated into the wilderness. For the next two weeks, we extensively patrolled the area, but he was nowhere to be found – no small feat for huge elephant. We had a breakthrough a month later when another SWT/KWS Anti-Poaching Team spotted a bull with the same injury. Comparing photos of the two, we knew it had to be the same elephant. Incredibly, he had walked more than 95 kilometres (60 miles) from the initial sighting. Again, it was late in the evening, so we organised a treatment for the following morning. Almost five years ago, one of our bright beneficiaries, David, lost his mother after she travelled to the Upper East Region to seek medical treatment. He became an orphan. In the midst of that tragedy, he left Accra and disappeared from our scholarship programme. We did everything we could to bring him back. We had even identified a loving family that was ready to take him in so he could continue his education through our Student Training and Education Programme (STEP), but his family was not ready to let him return. We never gave up. In 2024, we heard that David had returned to Accra, so we travelled to Kasoa to look for him. We were relieved to find him, but his family was not forthcoming, making it difficult for us to stay in touch. Sadly, by the time we returned, he had been taken back to the Upper East Region. Then, just recently, we received the phone call we had been praying for. One of David’s cousins had brought him back after learning that he was being mistreated. At just 13 years old, David had been out of school for years and was being made to work on farms instead. Today, David is finally back. He may be behind in school, but he is not behind in potential. We are determined to help him catch up, heal, and build the future he deserves. As we prepare to support David’s return to school, he will need school fees, uniforms, books, stationery, personal items, counselling, and the care every child deserves to thrive. Incredible. This ARROWED wild elephant knew exactly where to come in his hour of need: our Ithumba Reintegration Unit. Flanked by two ex-orphans who calmly stood sentry throughout the entire veterinary intervention, & tens of wild elephants just metres away, it is a powerful reminder that elephants have an awe-inspiring intuition & capacity for trust in those who earn it.

A bull found himself on the wrong side of a fence separating Tsavo East National Park from community land – and flatly refused to go back. Weeks passed, and we made five attempts to shepherd him ‘home’, but he flatly refused to cross back into the park. All the while, he was causing extensive damage to crops and water tanks, and his aggressive behaviour was putting lives at risk.
