Azerbaijan's General Prosecutor's Office said Khacatryan was arrested because he was a suspect in war crimes against Azeri's during the Karabakh war of the early 1990s. It pointed to his alleged involvement in a specific massacre on December 22, 1991,in Meshali village of Khojaly

After more than five years held hostage in Azerbaijan, Vicken Euljekjian was reunited with his wife, Linda Euljekjian, following his release and transfer to Armenian authorities. Euljekjian was one of four Armenian hostages — along with Gevorg Sujyan, Davit Davtyan, and Vagif Khachatryan — returned to Armenia on January 14 via the Berdzor (Lachin) Bridge. The announcement was made by Nikol Pashinyan, who confirmed that all four individuals are now safely on the territory of the Republic of Armenia. Euljekjian and Lebanese-Armenian civilian Maral Najarian were abducted by Azerbaijani special forces on November 10, 2020, during the evacuation of Shushi, Artsakh, after its capture by Azerbaijani forces. The two were retrieving personal belongings at the time. Najarian was released several months later, but Euljekjian remained in captivity. In a case widely condemned by Armenian officials and human rights advocates as politically motivated, Euljekjian was sentenced by an Azerbaijani court to 20 years in prison on charges deemed fabricated and unjust. His prolonged detention became a symbol of Azerbaijan’s abuse of prisoners in violation of international humanitarian law.

The trial of Vagif Khachatryan, abducted from Nagorno Karabakh, has started in Azerbaijan today. He, of course, has nothing to do with the crime, he is merely punished for being born in Nagorno Karabagh and for living on his ancestral land. I want to make this very clear, in Azerbaijan, where the government has not changed for more than 20 years, during which 5 presidents were elected in Nagorno-Karabakh, which Freedom House rated as partially free with 37 score by all indicators, and Azerbaijan - Not Free, with 9 scores, there cannot be a fair trial, fair court and/or fair accusation. All existing proceedings are a farce, a mockery of the European Convention and a violation of all universally accepted international norms in the context of all obligations undertaken by Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan must end the treatments that degrade people’s fundamental freedoms and human dignity and release all prisoners from Armenia and Nagorno Karabakh immediately. P. S.
