When our orphans return to the wild, how do they find a herd? Slowly. Reintegration isn't a single moment – it happens over years. At our Reintegration Units in Tsavo and Umani Springs, orphans grow steadily more independent, spending days and then nights away, until the wild becomes home. Not every orphan can walk the vast distances of Tsavo. Some carry injuries that never fully heal – bullet wounds, fractured bones, damaged limbs. That's why we built our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit. Set within the Kibwezi Forest, one of Kenya's last remaining groundwater woodlands, food and water remain abundant year-round. There are no gruelling treks through parched landscapes, just forest, springs, and space to heal. Sonje was one of the first to arrive through its doors. Rescued in 2012 with a shattered knee – likely from a bullet or spear – we nursed her back to health over months of intensive care. Her injuries meant she would never walk normally again, but she's never let that get in the way of living a full and independent wild life. Today, she's a matriarch, a mother, and a reminder of why we never give up. After all, Sonje never did either. We have now met 94 babies born wild to orphan elephants we rescued, raised and rewilded. In a wonderful demonstration of the lifelong bond they form with the Keepers, many of our ex-orphan mums return to our reintegration units after giving birth to show off their babies to the people who raised them. We have even witnessed several mothers returning to give birth at our units! Every rescue carries this possibility within it. At our Umani Springs unit, we are watching a new generation of elephants enter the world. What began with two elephants in 2014 – Murera and Sonje – has grown into a family herd already featuring four wild-born babies, with more on the way! This success is one of five examples of elephant conservation in action:

Day three of life at their new Ithumba home and Mwinzi, Toto and Natibu ended their adventures with a rainy stroll home. Guess who was leading the charge? None other than the three newbies who are settling in beautifully. Mwinzi is being his usual implacable self, Natibu is already sizing up the rest of the herd, and Toto is leaning on his Keepers as he takes it all in. When they are ready, they will reclaim their place in the wild. This graduation to Ithumba marks the next chapter in that journey, one that will continue to unfold over the coming years.

Elephant society is built on respect – and that was beautifully demonstrated at Ithumba today. When our dependent herd gathered for a drink, they deferred to their senior, Challa, a 21-year-old ex-orphan. Then, when the wild bulls wanted to drink, Challa stepped respectfully aside. While he towers over our dependent orphans, he's still a junior rank in elephant society. By watching Challa navigate these different relationships, our dependent orphans are learning the social etiquette they will need when they too reclaim their place in the wild. Every day, lessons like these unfold at our three Reintegration Units, helping our orphans learn how to live as wild elephants. Discover more:

It starts at one of our Nurseries – where milk-dependent, fragile babies receive round-the-clock care and begin to heal. Our Umani herd is heading home for the night, with Mwana, Kerrio and Kapei politely jostling for first position! Many of the elephants in this line no longer sleep in the stockades. But the Umani herd is a true unit, choosing to travel together. Those who now spend their nights in the forest lead their stockade-dependent friends home, see them safely inside, then head off to spend the night in the bush. Come morning, they’ll gather outside the stockades and set off together once again. None of these elephants are related by birth. Each is an orphan raised through our Orphans’ Project or, like Mwana, the wild-born offspring of one. Yet they are bound by the same deep bonds as any elephant family. He was born on 24 April 2025 to ex-orphan Zongoloni – her first calf, and the fourth wild-born of the Umani herd. He arrived after a 22-month pregnancy that kept our Keepers waiting; Zongoloni brought her old friends Ziwa and Faraja with her on the morning she went into labour. Zigi is now just over a year old, sharing the Kibwezi Forest with his three slightly older friends – Mwana, Lenny and Sulwe. The Umani crèche is getting full. Read more about Zigi:
