When our orphans return to the wild, how do they find a herd? Slowly. Reintegration isn't a single moment – it happens over years. At our Reintegration Units in Tsavo and Umani Springs, orphans grow steadily more independent, spending days and then nights away, until the wild becomes home. Even then, many still choose return to the place and people that raised them every now and again. Most don't go it alone. They join herds of ex-orphans who went wild before them, or form their own, made up of other ex-orphans they grew up with – the friendships made at the unit become the family they live wild with. Not every orphan can walk the vast distances of Tsavo. Some carry injuries that never fully heal – bullet wounds, fractured bones, damaged limbs. That's why we built our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit. Set within the Kibwezi Forest, one of Kenya's last remaining groundwater woodlands, food and water remain abundant year-round. There are no gruelling treks through parched landscapes, just forest, springs, and space to heal. Sonje was one of the first to arrive through its doors. Rescued in 2012 with a shattered knee – likely from a bullet or spear – we nursed her back to health over months of intensive care. Her injuries meant she would never walk normally again, but she's never let that get in the way of living a full and independent wild life. Today, she's a matriarch, a mother, and a reminder of why we never give up. After all, Sonje never did either. Join Shujaa and Weka on their graduation! From the moment we rescue an orphan, we are preparing them for life back in the wild. Moving to a Reintegration Unit is a pivotal point in this journey, offering expanded horizons, increased independence, and the mentorship of wild elephants — under the care and guidance of their Keepers. On 6th August 2025, Nairobi Nursery rascals Weka and Shujaa took this big step, graduating to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit in Tsavo East National Park. On 9th June, Mageno, Kitich, and Muwingu graduated from the Nairobi Nursery to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit in Tsavo East National Park, where they will continue their journey back to the wild. Released today, enjoy our special film documenting their journey and the warm greetings they received from old friends, and new, in Tsavo. Graduations are a milestone moment in an orphan's journey back to a wild life, but it'll be at least 5 years until this trio are ready to take that next step. At all our reintegration units the focus is on supporting the orphans as they transition back to the wild. For the female elephants this leads on to starting a family of their own. To date, we know of 77 calves born to elephants we’ve rescued and raised: their wild-living mothers choosing return, so that we might share in their joy. Three of the births in the last year have been in Umani. Babies Sulwe and Zigi, under the watchful gaze of mothers Sonje and Zongoloni, are two of them. Day three of life at their new Ithumba home and Mwinzi, Toto and Natibu ended their adventures with a rainy stroll home. Guess who was leading the charge? None other than the three newbies who are settling in beautifully. Mwinzi is being his usual implacable self, Natibu is already sizing up the rest of the herd, and Toto is leaning on his Keepers as he takes it all in. When they are ready, they will reclaim their place in the wild. This graduation to Ithumba marks the next chapter in that journey, one that will continue to unfold over the coming years.

Meet Zigi, the youngest of the wild-born babies at our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit. He was born on 24 April 2025 to ex-orphan Zongoloni – her first calf, and the fourth wild-born of the Umani herd. He arrived after a 22-month pregnancy that kept our Keepers waiting; Zongoloni brought her old friends Ziwa and Faraja with her on the morning she went into labour. Zigi is now just over a year old, sharing the Kibwezi Forest with his three slightly older friends – Mwana, Lenny and Sulwe. The Umani crèche is getting full. Read more about Zigi:
