The Centre is opposing a reform that could help reservation benefits reach the poorest and most deprived families within reserved communities themselves. They first opposed in 2024 then 2025 and now 2026! In 2024, a 7-judge Supreme Court Bench allowed sub-classification within Scheduled Castes. Justice B.R. Gavai also observed that the State should evolve a policy to identify the creamy layer among SC/ST communities so that affirmative-action benefits reach those who need them most. Then in August 2025, Ramashankar Prajapati (OBC) and Yamuna Prasad (SC) approached the Supreme Court seeking economic prioritisation within reservation benefits, without reducing the existing quota. Now, the Centre has opposed their plea, arguing that SC/ST reservation addresses historical and social discrimination and cannot be determined merely by economic status. Caste discrimination is real and must be fought. But ensuring that the most deprived people within reserved communities get a fair opportunity is also reform. Given this history, when reservation has finally been granted, those who oppose it—and I specifically use the word 'opponents' to refer to both the Government of India and the BJP government in Gujarat—are effectively against the very principle of reservation.
