These were nonviolent offenses, the kinds of minor charges where people often remain in jail not because they’re a danger, but because they’re poor. Think about this: It costs Fulton County taxpayers about $115 per day per inmate to keep someone in jail. Yet there are people sitting in jail on $50, $85, or other bonds under $100 simply because they don’t have the money. Does that make any sense? No two traffic stops are ever the same. What started as a seatbelt stop quickly turned into something more. Officer Morgan Smith and Officer Karim Saoud were out reminding drivers to wear their seatbelts and stopped one driver who wasn’t wearing his. When our officers asked for his information, he gave them what turned out to be a fake name. When you don’t have a phone or wallet and can’t remember your social security number, that raises some red flags with our officers. Officer Smith and Officer Saoud quickly figured out that the suspect had a warrant out for his arrest from Bradford County. This traffic stop ended in a trip for our suspect to the Duval County jail.
