two thoughts on deconstruction 1. a respectful deconstruction is generally followed by a reconstruction 2. a complete deconstruction / reconstruction is a hero's journey but for the author, and for the story itself

put another way, a successful decon/recon cycle is the story of an author charting his own path to salvation

explication: the characters of the last unicorn are deeply flawed archetypes from heroic fantasy: useless wizard, superannuated maiden, unicorn in a world grown past her kind this is the deconstruction. the reconstruction is their journey home to the story in which they belong.

haggard is the failure mode that the author, himself, must overcome haggard's overthrow and the completion of the cycle--the return of magic to the world through the archetypes transcending their profanity in the performance of their narrative rite--buys salvation for the author
