I’m again imploring you to give Ron Howard’s Backdraft a viewing if you haven’t already. I don’t like Ron Howard- I love him. I grew up on his films & I still firmly believe he’s got more great films in his holster. Howard is at his best when given a meaningful story & a strong ensemble of actors. Backdraft is one of his best.

Sylvester Stallone was robbed of the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Creed. I’ll never let it go. Stallone was shockingly great & Creed smashed my expectations overall. I wanted Sly to win & have another iconic moment in The Rocky franchise, especially so many decades after he won Best Picture for the first film. This snub by The Academy will forever annoy me.

Killers of the Flower Moon is one of a handful of films that I call “litmus test movies”: if you don’t see why this is a spectacular film, I sort of question your overall judgment in film. Call me reductive- it’s just how I feel. This is a masterpiece from Scorsese & DiCaprio should’ve received an Oscar nomination at a minimum.

While broke in the 1970s, he sold Butkus for $40 to buy food but bought him back for $15,000 after Rocky’s success. Butkus later starred in Rocky and Rocky II, and Stallone still keeps photos of him, calling him a loyal best friend. Welcome Dwight to the Stallone family

Bones and All deserves way, way more love. Part of the reason I’m a fan of Timothée Chalamet is because of films like this- this performance from Chalamet is insanity in the best way possible. Luca Guadagnino & Chalamet clearly have a short-hand together that leads to great art.

The Fisher King is one reason I love director Terry Gilliam. Featuring Jeff Bridges & Robin Williams, I’m not even sure what genre you’d classify this film in because it’s a combination of fantasy, comedy & drama. This earned Williams an Oscar nomination for Best Actor & won Mercedes Ruehl the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. This is a beautiful film.

I don’t know how many times I saw this film growing up, but it was A LOT! Its success and impact highlighted the power of popular culture as I know I am certainly not the only one inspired by Rocky’s journey. Happy Birthday Rocky! Al Pacino only has one #Oscar. That is a travesty. I know everyone always mentions Denzel should’ve won for Malcom X instead of Pacino for Scent of a Woman, but even though Al should’ve won for other films, this was still an all-time great performance from Pacino. He’s electric.
