Andy Burnham has pledged that Labour’s next manifesto will include a commitment to change the voting system to proportional representation. I agree with this. First Past the Post is a ridiculous voting system. A system that discards votes and can put a government in power on less than 35%...

Unbelievable… A ridiculous idea … he’s clearly got the @LibDems lined up for a ‘coalition’ Govt.. The worst thing we ever did @Conservatives was to go into coalition with the @LibDems for 5 years in 2010 …

There is no democracy, these are all powerless puppets.

All it does is force popular parties to concede ground to less popular parties to get into power Everywhere that does this is a mess

PR just introduced another raft of absurdities. FPTP is the best of a whole bunch of worse options.

So you get a government where the majority of MPs get ignored a coalition emerges where not one manifesto pledge has to be honoured and the electorate can’t hold them to account!

Um, isn’t he in government already? Are we still fooled by ‘free beer tomorrow’?

Why not now? He's using it as a vote grab.

In Wales they gone full PR and it's ridiculous. It's a stitch up between @Plaid_Cymru + @WelshLabour to gerrymander seats. We now have multi member (huge) constituencies, so which which one of the 6 members represents me? PR is worse than FPTP.

Meanwhile, 17.4 million people voted to leave the European Union, and apparently that democratic mandate can simply be ignored. This bozo would die of shock if anything he said ever collided with reality.

2 sides. with FPTP at least you know where the blame lies. PR generally means a coalition. Weak government.

And a system of PR, although it sounds fairer is going to require a botched together Government where deals are done behind closed doors and very little of any consequence gets done. At least in FPTP a rubbish Government can be kicked out after 5 years.

Great. Now we’ll never be able to get rid of unpopular governments or politicians. Troublesome MPs? They can be rid of quite easily as well.

Justin Trudeau made a similar pledge, which he soon abandoned. It will be interesting to see if Burnham will follow through (assuming he wins an election).

This is a constitufional issue and should be a matter for a National referendum (like before) not wrapped into one political party manifesto. The same goes for any proposal to rejoin the EU.
