Remembering the great Alice Coltrane who was born on this day in 1937. An accomplished pianist and one of the few harpists in the history of jazz, Coltrane was also one of the foremost exponents of spiritual jazz. Her eclectic music proved widely influential both within and outside the world of jazz. She was married to jazz saxophonist and composer John Coltrane, with whom she performed in 1966–1967. Alice Coltrane recorded many albums as a bandleader, beginning in the late 1960s and early 1970s for Impulse! and other major record labels. Here, she is playing the harp in 1970. From DREAM to REALITY Two weeks ago, as part of our resource mobilization strategy for #Bamutakudde Village, we announced a vision to launch Bamutakudde Catering Services an enterprise designed to create employment for 10-15 women in our community. I am thrilled to share a major milestone. Chef Godwin, a leading professional chef in Uganda, responded to our call. On Sunday, he and his team of 6 chefs volunteered a full day to train our women in professional culinary skills, including pilau rice preparation and professional fruit carving for catering. Beyond the training, Chef Godwin has committed to: 1. 10 full scholarships for 10 women for a 4-month professional culinary program 2. Donation of start-up equipment (saucepans, food warmers, dishes) 3. Strategic partnership on his major catering projects This is a powerful example of skills transfer, private sector - community partnership, and women's economic empowerment in action. Ursula Haverbeck, known in Germany as the "Nazi Grandma", became one of the most prominent holocaust deniers in modern European history. A 96 year-old former accountant who worked at the Auschwitz concentration camp during World War 2, she spent decades publicly claiming that the systematic murder of 6 million Jews was a fabrication. She was convicted multiple times by German courts for incitement and holocaust denial, and served prison time well into her nineties, before her death in 2024. Germany has some of the strictest holocaust denial laws in the world. Haverbeck tested every single one of them. The survivors and the dead deserve better than to have their reality denied by someone who was actually there.

Even more interesting from an acting/performance perspective: Hayworth was a highly trained dancer — her father was dancer Eduardo Cansino — and Astaire was extremely impressed by her ability. He later described Hayworth as his favourite on-screen dancing partner. You Were Never Lovelier (1942) was their second and final film together, following You’ll Never Get Rich (1941). And there’s also another interesting fact about Astaire in this film: his character (Bob Davis) says he’s from Omaha, Nebraska— which was Fred Astaire’s actual birthplace.
