As a millennial, I don’t think we fully realize the power we hold yet. The average age in America is 38. That means if millennials really showed up, we could flip the scales in politics. In Black communities especially, we have to work the soil of politics to turn out our generation if we want to see the harvest in our lifetime. If we’re up to bat, we need to be clear about the kind of leaders we’re calling for. We have to have hard and honest conversations with each other. Too often, we’ve looked for leadership in a certain package or personality. But in this climate, we need leaders who are strategic and willing to fight for the best interest of the people. “Nice” leadership has given us the results we see today. Most teachers in this country are regularly observed as part of their professional development. Two thirds of teachers do not think this has made a difference to their actual practice. Teachers do not understand the feedback they receive. They do not agree with the feedback they receive. They do not feel willing or capable to implement the feedback they receive. These things are facts, and they are both worrying and upsetting. And none of this is a secret. We all know it, we've all experienced it. When we asked Carousel Teaching users what topics they wanted us to make courses on, the most common response was "how to observe lessons and give feedback." Ben Rice and I are now MAD EXCITED to announce our How To Observe a Lesson and Give Feedback course. It's mega. We filmed a bunch of lessons, and we also filmed me observing those lessons. We deconstruct the science of observations, and the art of giving feedback. It's pretty damn innovative, and we're confident it will help teachers and leaders get better at these critical skills. Hots&Cots made it to Congress! Last night, I had the incredible honor of traveling to DC for an event hosted by Better Homes 4 Heroes, where I spoke alongside members of the Quality of Life Panel. In my remarks (timed perfectly at 4:56!), I shared how Hots&Cots is improving barracks living conditions and the quality of life for service members. One of the highlights? Having one of our team members and a soldier we helped through a review join me. It was a full-circle moment showing the real impact we’re making. In the audience were Rep. Don Bacon 🇺🇸✈️🏍️⭐️🎖️, Chrissy Houlahan, Congresswoman Jen Kiggans & Rep. Richard Hudson. After my speech, a teammate and I had a chance to chat briefly with them about key concerns, including women’s safety in the barracks. It’s surreal to reflect on how far we’ve come—from creating a platform where service members can leave honest reviews to now having their voices heard by policymakers and advocates. Thanks you to Better Homes for Heroes for the invite and support and thank you to everyone who’s supported this mission, left reviews, or reached out to share your stories. A lot of times, our intention in trying to correct someone may be to help them, but the way we do it could be insensitive and hurtful. Before we give corrective feedback to someone, let’s ask ourselves these 4 questions and go ahead only if the answers to all of these are yes. Ask yourself: * Am I the right person to give corrective feedback? * Do I have the right intention to give corrective feedback? * Do I know the right way (sensitive to the feelings of others) to give corrective feedback? * Is it the right time, or do I need to wait until later? In Toowoomba tonight for our first branch meeting in Groom and the eastern end of Maranoa. The idea of branches is get people from a certain area with similar values together to engage with each other. From that engagement we need to coordinate our activities to deliver our solutions to the community. If we could get the 200,000 plus people that marched last weekend to deliver 50 flyers with our policies we can get our message out to 10 million homes reducing our need on the mainstream media. Our members will also get to preselect our candidates. Preselection is incredibly important as it is the most direct way to hold politicians to account. One of the reasons why politicians no longer listen to the people is that they are selected by the party not elected. That is a key point of difference with People First - we will give members a say about candidates and policy. "I pushed them to be as good as they can be, but it doesn't mean I don't care about you as a person." High standards aren't cruel, they're a sign that you care. It means pushing people beyond their comfort zone and showing genuine care for people. Perhaps not to experience the same emotion that‘s running through their body, but to accept that emotion exists during this interaction. And perhaps not to agree with the sporting lens this player brings to the meeting but to accept it this players sporting view might be different to yours as coach. Empathy! A communication tool, a communication skill that can be worked on daily. Last summer I found myself sitting in a room in Switzerland surrounded by world leaders from completely different industries, all talking about the future of our planet. A very different environment to what I was used to! I was invited onto to a channel to give my take on leadership with my best mate and brother Jay. We talked about leadership and what it meant to us both. I always used to think leaders were born but it’s far from the truth…. They are made. My biggest realisation was that we talk a lot about leadership like it’s confidence and certainty. Like leaders always know what to do. The truth is they don’t… and that’s ok. But good leaders will go seek out better answers and grow. While poor leaders will leave it to someone else to do or turn a blind eye. The day made me realise most of my growth has come from failing. I try to lead with my best intentions, but upon reflection or feedback, I realise there was a better way to do it and then next time…. I lead better and the process repeats! And that day forced me to look at myself properly. As for me, leadership isn’t a title, or being a CEO or having an armband. It’s influence. And that’s the scary part, because everyone has it. Even my two young kids. Every morning before school I tell them the same thing: Be the sunshine in the room ☀️ Because whether we like it or not, we’re leading every single day. In the changing room. I spent the last couple of weeks in Europe meeting with all kinds of great thought leaders and professionals to discuss the issues we’re facing and how to move forward. There were also multiple screenings of our film, An Inconvenient Study which drew packed crowds and led to many great conversations with those that have been personally affected by vaccine injury. This trip has reminded me of the power of the people. This is a GLOBAL movement, not a local one. We all know someone who took the clot shot under duress. Imagine if they’d all just said no? Now is NOT the time to be silent or hide your beliefs to play it safe. That will surely come back to haunt us all. Now IS the time to continue to stand up for our freedoms. We are all witnessing what is going on in the world and how quickly freedom can be taken from us- but also how quickly it can be given back when the people stand up. Roy on bipartisanship: There are ways to work together. We saw it on the housing bill in Washington. We’ve got to have more people who are willing to sit down at the table, even if they have disparate opinions. When you look at goals, often our goals are shared, even if we are on opposite ends politically. We want a good education for our kids. We want a good-paying job. We want clean air and water. We want quality health care. We all want the same things and we have to be willing to sit down at the table and find ways forward. Find a way to achieve consensus. I did that as Governor time and time again. I want to do that in Washington, and I believe that Washington could use a dose of North Carolina common sense. I'm ready to come and try to provide that.
