Central to the successful rewilding of both species is gradual acceptance by the locals. Our elephant orphans hone their survival skills over years through face-to-face interactions with wild elephants, and we tend to find herds are accepting of their presence. Rhinos are different. Deeply territorial, they don't welcome newcomers. Our rhino orphans learn through scent, dung piles and the slow process of being recognised by the wild rhinos around them. Every day, dawn to dusk, their Keepers walk them along the trails and dung piles left by their wild neighbours. A tragic incident occurred at the Dubare Elephant Camp in Karnataka's Kodagu district, where a woman tourist lost her life after an elephant reportedly fell on her during a clash between two elephants. The accident took place while elephants were being bathed in the Cauvery River at the Dubare camp. During the bathing session, an elephant named Kanjan allegedly attacked another elephant, Marthanda. In the chaos, one of the elephants lost balance and fell onto the tourist.

How many elephants can you count? During his morning patrol over Tsavo, pilot Roan tallied more than 150 elephants in this herd. It’s a sign of the times: When food and water are plentiful, elephants can aggregate in great numbers without putting too much stress on the landscape. This ecosystem is home to Kenya’s biggest population of elephants. Spanning 50,000 square kilometres, it is prime elephant country. While Tsavo’s elephants enjoy themselves, we will be patrolling overhead and on the ground, working to keep them safe. Learn more and support our conservation work:
